Atractosteus spatula is the largest surviving finches and one of the largest freshwater fish in North America. Although many sources claim that the alligator eels in large individuals are between 3 and 4 meters long, there is no conclusive evidence.
One of the largest alligator eels on scientific records was caught by American fisherman Kenny Williams on Valentine's Day on February 14, 2011, in Oxbow Lake on the Mississippi River. The alligator eel is 2.572 meters long and weighs 148 kg, with an estimated age of between 50 and 70 years.
Williams donated the alligator eel to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for display.
