After the horrific "death case" in San Antonio, Texas, another 16 people, including 4 children, were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

U.S. officials announced Wednesday that the death toll had risen to 53, including 22 immigrants from Mexico, seven immigrants from Guatemala and two immigrants from Honduras.

The official said the migrant's body was found inside a roadside van.

The San Antonio Police Department said the horrific discovery was made after a worker heard a cry for help — leading to the discovery of "piles of bodies" inside the car.

San Antonio has a temperature record of 100F (37.8 degrees Celsius) or higher for 17 days of the month.

It is estimated that the temperature inside the car is about 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius).

The three suspects are in custody, but it is unclear whether they have "an absolute connection to this," said SAPD chief William McManus.

Police said they found 16 victims — 12 adults and 4 children — in the back of the truck unconscious and took them to a local hospital.

Survivors are understood to be "fighting for their lives" in hospitals, and most of them suffer from severe heat stroke and exhaustion.
