After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Ma Yaonan, principal of Changshan Middle School, organized the Fifth Army of the Shandong Anti-Japanese Salvation Army in the area of Zhoucun in Zibo. Yu Miao, his mother, who was influenced by progressive ideas, and her whole family participated in the anti-Japanese armed struggle led by Ma Yaonan. In 1937, at the age of 14, her mother became a party underground transport officer, clever and resourceful, often risking her life to deliver intelligence for Ma Yaonan's troops. In August 1938, through the introduction of Chen Mingchuan, a cadre of the Eighth Route Army, his mother Yu Miao joined the Eighth Route Army.
