"Guangzhou, as a thousand-year-old commercial capital, has now developed into a super-large city with a population of more than 18 million, and in such a huge urban ecosystem, creating a safe environment is an extremely complex task, and visual communication should be used in the city." Cao Xue, chief designer of the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympics and dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, said in an interview with reporters recently that visual communication should be used in urban emergency safety to make the city safer.
On the occasion of the 20th National Safety Production Month, Cao Xue was invited to serve as the expert review team leader of the "Guangzhou Second Emergency Management Excellent Publicity Works Evaluation and Broadcasting Activity" jointly sponsored by the Guangzhou Municipal Safety Commission Office, the Municipal Education Bureau, the Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and Television Tourism, the Municipal Emergency Management Bureau, the Municipal State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission and other departments. In the one-and-a-half-month collection stage, more than 2,100 works of various types participated in the competition, and more than 2.4 million people voted in the subsequent online evaluation process, which was beyond Cao Xue's expectations.
"In addition to the participation of emergency systems and enterprises involved in safety production responsibility, it is very interesting to see the works of the general public, especially college, middle and primary school students and even kindergarten children." Cao Xue believes that whether it is government departments, enterprises, or citizens and students, one of the characteristics of this year's activity works is that the level is generally high.
"This may be related to the high incidence of various disasters in recent years and the widespread publicity of emergency safety, such as the design level of many safety production propaganda materials I have seen in the community and school bulletin boards." Cao Xue said.
What impressed Cao Xue was the painting "Hero" by a primary school student in Huadu District, which showed emergency rescue workers bravely moving forward in the face of forest fires without fear of life and death. "There is hope in an era of heroes, and this education is especially important for young people." Cao Xue sighed.
During the selection process, Cao Xue and the members of the expert group will give priority to the artistry and representativeness of the works, and select excellent works according to the characteristics of different groups. He believes that good popular science visual works in the field of safe production should not only be artistic, but also social, so that the public can have a sense of "beauty" and "use" after seeing it.
"Any exhibition, creation, the purpose is to pass on, in the field of emergency safety visual communication, first of all to convey the word 'urgent', and secondly, how to achieve the effect of 'response'." For example, our common types of road safety signs are designed in accordance with this idea. Cao Xue told reporters that the design work is not only a test of professionalism, but also a comprehensive expression of cultural accumulation.
Cao Xue believes that Guangzhou's cultural heritage, city thickness and design atmosphere are very good, you can consider embedding more emergency safety elements in the city image vi system, so as to visually convey so that citizens can feel safe care anytime and anywhere in the city.
In addition to the design master, Cao Xue also has another identity, that is, a college teacher who has been teaching for many years. As the dean and professor of the School of Visual Arts and Design of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, he was very appreciative after seeing that a youth group was specially set up for this year's event.
"Today's young people, especially in school students, safety literacy still needs to be improved, and the government, society, schools, and parents should form a joint force to strengthen publicity and education in this regard."
