The Emerging Technologies and Design Program (launched in 2001) is open to architecture and engineering graduates who wish to develop their skills and pursue scientific knowledge of architectural design, and the course is located in a new production model. We examine new synergies between architecture and ecology through the critical intersection of computational design and manufacturing. Our focus is on exploring the cultural and social potential of new materials and spatial configurations, architectural and eco-urban design in the dynamic context of emerging biomes.
The project aims to stimulate critical thinking through experiential research-driven design projects that are developed in an intellectually rigorous and creative studio environment. Our projects are iteratively developed through assumptions, material and computational experiments, robotic fabrication and evaluation, reflected through oral presentations and group discussions, and documented in analyses and scientifically structured papers.
01 | Arctic settlements
Settlement Design in The Arctic

The aim of the research project is to design an eco-settlement in the Arctic region. The design trial is divided into three phases. The first to address the analysis of existing biome conditions and the selection of key strategies to address sustainability.
The second phase is dedicated to the development of the network to accommodate the different functional planning of the settlement. The final stage is the generation of the architectural form organization to address multiple conflicting objectives. This iterative design approach facilitates the development of multiple options for a network system, using specific fields for aggregation and subsequent analysis. The morphological organization of the building is to create a modular system according to the design intent, and the recombination will produce new architectural forms and areas with different functions.
In order to optimize morphology in extreme climatic conditions, the Wallacei platform engine was used to evaluate evolutionary optimization, achieving complex fitness goals. The final analysis of the evolutionary morphological organization and network system reveals the potential of modular system design under extreme environmental conditions.

The design experiment of the scheme is divided into two main phases: the first phase addresses the generation of the morphological organization of the building to address multiple conflicting goals. The second phase is devoted to sequential simulation of façade systems to solve a new set of evolutionary goals.
By combining three separate approaches developed by team members, a new strategy for developing architectural forms emerged. The resulting raw geometric simulation indicates the implementation of a more complex set of goals and fitness standards, where each fitness standard is set to a ratio between two conflicting values. In order to find the optimal relationship between the genome and the target, extensive simulation analyses were performed using the Wallacei platform engine to evaluate evolutionary optimization.
Part of the subsequent research was devoted to sequential simulation of façade system development. The results of the previous computational type were analyzed and decoded from the Pareto frontier solution to reduce the range of possible solutions. For this simulation, a new set of goals, each of which reflects local environmental conditions, was implemented in the summer. The evolution of the façade system has led to a series of optimized morphologies to best suit their location and function.
03 | Bio Bot

Due to the rapid degradation of ecosystems due to landscape fragmentation, pollution and overexploitation of resources, society is facing problems such as energy crisis, thermal imbalance, high carbon emissions, and endangered species. The project aims to alleviate these issues by creating a green network that connects existing green spaces and reconnects to London's green belt. The strategy includes self-sustainable energy production and the use of "biorobotic" modules to transform underutilized spaces into public areas.
These biorobots are a hybrid of construction and ecological machinery, which can adapt to various environmental scenarios and solve the problem of urban environmental degradation. They play a role at the intersection of biofuel production and power infrastructure, filtering pollutants from the air and purifying rainwater and grey water, while facilitating flora connectivity of commensal species.
This approach positions technology as a restorative force, creating new interactions between humans, non-human species, the local environment, and time. Real-time data monitoring enables these eco-machines to adapt and evolve beyond mere filling strategies. The project highlights the ethical responsibility of biorobots for their production, management and care throughout their life cycle.

Digital & Materials Manufacturing explores physical and digital computing techniques for developing building quality for different material systems that adapt to specific climatic environments. The digital model will explore the possibilities of various environmental parameters, while the physical model will explore the integration of material behavior and manufacturing processes.
The techniques generated by the concepts and knowledge generated by the hierarchical organization of biological systems and computational models developed in the seminar course "Natural Systems and Biomimicry" will be implemented. Design My purpose is to design, develop computational workflow techniques, analyze, and fully fabricate material systems, located on EmTech's design and construction research agenda.
