A breeze swept over the wisteria trellis, and a crisp lute and melodious bamboo flute "intercepted" passers-by who were hurrying. Stop and listen, a song mixed with the fragrance of grass "Jiangnan Smoke and Rain" gracefully came. Who plays the flute in the shadow of the apricot blossoms? Who is renewing the bullet in the low-brow letter procedure?
"This is the first time I have seen a folk music performance at Tsinghua," said a passing classmate excitedly.
Compared with Western music and pop music, traditional folk music seems to be more niche. Many teachers and students learned that tsinghua still had a folk band through "meeting folk music".

"Meet folk music" sprouted from a small setback. In 2021, the Tsinghua University Student Art Troupe Folk Band carefully prepared an indoor special performance, the team members were highly motivated, rehearsed a lot of programs, but in the end the audience was smaller than the actors.
Therefore, they hope to go outside and enter the daily lives of teachers and students, so that more people have the opportunity to contact, understand and like folk music.
Therefore, on the second Saturday of every month, the idea of a "Meet folk music" roadshow in the small square on the east side of Tingtao Garden was born.
However, everything did not go as smoothly as they thought. During the first roadshow in October 2021, the scene was cold and the response was cold, which undoubtedly poured cold water on the "Meet folk music" that had just popped out.
However, the team members were not discouraged, considering that the weather was getting colder, they innovated the interaction and communication methods, moved the second phase of the roadshow indoors, combined with the branch activities of the two classes in rixin college and the school of architecture and the "one-two-nine" series of aesthetic education activities, and opened a live broadcast channel of station B, so that "Tsinghua Folk Music" went out of the campus.
In addition, they have made breakthroughs in programming. "Flower Good Full Moon", "Wild Bees Flying", "Plants vs. Zombies", "Bear Haunting"... Familiarity, the collision of East and West, and the common appreciation of elegance and customs are precisely such eclectic that makes folk music play a new sound and attracts more and more audiences.

How long does it take to go from scratch to becoming a cello principal? Fan Li, a 2021 doctoral student in the Department of Mathematics, said: Four years.
When she first entered the folk band in her freshman year, Fan Li, who had only studied piano, did not know the cello at all. Why are there still Western instruments in folk orchestras? It turned out that after the symphonization of folk music, it was found that there was a serious lack of bass, so the bass part of Western music was used to supplement the symphonic bass part of national music.
The piano is a keyboard instrument, and the sound is made by tapping the keys, and there is no pitch problem. However, as a bowed string instrument, the cello must grasp both pitch and timbre. Fan Li was very uncomfortable at first, she could not control the bow well, and the sound she pulled out trembled and the pitch was greatly reduced. "There is no way, only practice", Fan Li is not in a hurry to play the repertoire, but insists on practicing the basic skills every day, paying attention to the shape of the hand, practicing empty strings, changing bows, changing handles... When others were already bored and bored, she still practiced meticulously and repeatedly in strict accordance with the teacher's requirements.
Teammates commented on Fan Li: "She gives people the impression of being quiet and down-to-earth, and now she often spends a lot of time practicing basic skills, which many students can't do." ”

"The setbacks and blows I received while practicing the piano are exactly the same as what I experienced in my studies and scientific research." Dong Liang, a 2020 doctoral student in the Department of Water Conservancy, said that she once gave up seeking advice from her teacher when learning guzheng, but purely relied on self-study, and the more she played, the more dissatisfied she became, and she fell into painful internal friction and regurgitation. This experience still reminds her not to close herself off, but to always listen to the teachings and advice of others.

"My life is 'seamless', from the office of the new water conservancy hall to the rehearsal hall of the Mengminwei Building, from the original 5 minutes of slow and leisurely walking, to now riding a bicycle for 1 minute." Dong Liang used "addiction" to describe her feelings for the guzheng, "I love it very much, sometimes I want to quit it, but I can't quit it at all." Practicing the piano will not only not delay your studies, but will make you change your mood after studying scientific research and relieve your feelings. The rehearsal hall is Dong Liang's favorite place in addition to the laboratory, practicing at least 300 days a year, practicing for an average of more than 1 hour a day.
For Zhao Xuxiang, a sophomore in the Department of Physics, Erhu, who has been with him for 12 years, is "also a teacher and a friend". It is like a close companion who accompanies him in his growth; like a wordless teacher, inspiring him and inspiring him in art and life. When exposed to different styles of music during the performance, he will involuntarily substitute himself into the creator's state of mind, as if he has experienced someone else's story, "like cosplay in a virtual environment", he laughs.

"Music is a part of my life," said Chen Jingyi, a 2020 master's student in the Department of Chinese. She studied in Tsinghua's Department of Electronics as an undergraduate and then entered an overseas university for further study, but she suddenly made a bold decision.
When studying overseas, Chen Jingyi once fell into anxiety, "During that time, I stayed alone in the rented house all day, I didn't want to go anywhere, I didn't have the strength to reply to news, and I couldn't study and scientific research." After countless nights of hard thinking, she finally faced her heart: "I don't want to continue to study electronics, I love flutes, I love literature and art, I love traditional Chinese culture." "Inspired by love, Chen Jingyi gave up her overseas studies and returned to China to retake the graduate school." Since then, my life has been completely different. After successfully entering the Tsinghua Chinese Department, she decided to take traditional Chinese music as her research direction.

After practicing an instrument for a long time, the temperament of people and musical instruments will become more and more similar. In folk bands, the "temperament" of different voices is also very different. The plucked voice part is delicate, beautiful and melodious, "falling on the plate and pearls, shaking the jade zhengzheng"; the percussion part is often interpreted majestically and heroically, "suddenly becoming exuberant, and the warrior goes to the enemy field".
"Compared to Western music, traditional folk music is more difficult to play in ensembles." Shao Qing, the branch secretary of the folk band, said that because traditional ethnic instruments were basically invented as solo instruments, the timbre varies greatly. Melodious bamboo flute, gentle guqin, such as weeping erhu... National musical instruments have their own characteristics.
"The rehearsal hall of the folk band may also be different from what everyone thinks. Students practice their own pianos, and may not say a word for half a day, which is the norm. Yu Hongfei, the leader of the folk band, said, "If you don't close it when you play it, you will repeat it again." Needless to say, the tacit understanding flowed quietly in the sound of blending music.
For folk music, students also have their own unique views and expressions. Some students think that folk music is the music of irrational numbers, paying attention to rhyme, virtual reality, ethereal artistic conception, and implicit expression. Some students use mathematics to calculate musical notes and use computer programming language to present the colors, lines and rhythms of folk music. Some students also associated folk music with the five elements of yin and yang and the branches of heaven and dry earth in traditional Chinese culture...
No matter how different the temperament, disciplinary background, and musical understanding, the common love for folk music has formed a strong cohesive force, uniting everyone together and resonating with the same frequency, which has also condensed into the unique style of the folk band: eight-tone ensemble, open and inclusive.
"Gentlemen are harmonious but different", this is the common feeling of the students of the folk band, "In this collective, we are very happy." The team's performance is not entirely for the audience, and the performance process will also make everyone feel a sense of accomplishment. Because, everyone likes the music itself, not the feeling of being surrounded by the audience. "Because of the same love and affection, everyone can always reach a consensus on many issues.
