At the end of the eighteenth century, due to the increasing exploitation, after several strikes and protests, an unprecedented workers' strike was held in Chicago in 1886. In commemoration of this great workers' movement, Engels announced at the inaugural congress of the Second International organized that May 1 of each year would be designated as International Workers' Day.
On May 1, 1920, "Labor Day Commemorative Number" was published in The New Youth, Vol. 7, No. 6. He published Articles such as Cai Yuanpei's inscription on "The Sacredness of Labor", Sun Yat-sen's inscription on "The World is just", Li Dazhao's "History of the May Day" Movement, and Chen Duxiu's "The Problem of Hunan Female Workers in Shanghai Housheng Spinning Factory". In Beijing, Li Dazhao led a commemorative event centered on Peking University. Peking University students boycotted classes on this day, and Peking University Student Weekly published the "Labor Memorial" issue. This is the first time that China has commemorated the "May Day International Labor Day" and the first "May Day" in Chinese history.
