Master Koichi talks about the method of learning calligraphy.

I think the thing of writing is in the family's business, what does it mean for monks to pay attention to writing? Therefore, I think it is very wrong to talk about the method of writing. Because if a monk can only write, and does not know anything about other learning, especially if he does not understand the Dharma, then he can be said to be the scum of Buddhism. It is shameful to know that monks do not understand the Dharma and can only write. The only duty of a monk is to understand the Dharma and to study the Dharma. However, it is not absolutely impossible for monks to pay attention to writing, but it is right not to use full spirit to cope with writing; monks should study the Dharma with all their might, and when they have time, writing is not indispensable. If you write a way, it is not useless to be able to write pairs and middle halls to send to people as a tool for propagating the Fa.

Although today's name is to talk about the method of writing, my original intention is to persuade you to learn the Dharma. Because everyone has the practice of practice and can study the Dharma, they can use their leisure time to talk about the method of writing.

About the origin of writing, the schools, as well as the style of writing, the way of chapters, the use of ink... The ancients have made it very clear, and there are many books to refer to, and I don't have to talk about it. Now just my personal experience and experience in writing, I will talk about it casually.

Your writing grades are very good. But it's not right that each person is limited to one piece of writing every day, and there's only one look. When practicing writing every day, you should write and practice the four forms of seal writing, large letter, middle letter, and small letter. If there is no time, the middle letter can be omitted; as for the other words, they are indispensable and require a lot of practice. I have a little comment that I would like to contribute to you, and I think it is important to mention the methods described below.

I always advise people who have the heart to learn characters: First learn from the seal characters. Why? There are several reasons for this:

(1) You can study the "Shuowen" by the way, and you can have a little common sense about philology. Because every word has its source, it is not imaginary, and it cannot be scribbled casually about a stroke. If you don't study the seal book and study the Shuowen, you won't understand the origin of the word science and the characters—it can be said that you don't recognize the words! Therefore, if you start with the seal book, not only will the writing progress, but it is also very interesting.

(2) After being able to write seal characters, then learn to write in letters, and when writing with one stroke, you will not write wrong. I used to see manuscripts copied by several students at the Sanatorium, and there were many, many wrong words. Know: It's shameful to write a wrong word — just like someone who learns English, you can't misspel a letter. If you misspelle the word, how do people know? Writing our own Chinese characters incorrectly is even more impossibility. If we first learn the seal book and then write it in italics, then we can avoid many mistakes. In addition, writing seal characters can also be the basis for writing lishu, calligraphy, and xingshu. After learning the seal characters, it is easy to write lishu, calligraphy, and writing - because the seal book is the root of all kinds of writing.

If you want to write seal characters, you can first refer to books such as "Shuowen". There is a Qing Dynasty Wu Da Wu Da: Qing Dynasty Philologist, a native of Wu County, Jiangsu Province, proficient in paleography, and has authored many philological works such as "Speaking of the Head of the Literary Department", "Saying of Characters", "Saying of Ancient Texts", and "Saying of Ancient Texts", which are quite creative in philology. The "Speaking of the Head of the Literary Department", that is indispensable. Because this book is very good and easy for beginners, if you want to learn to write, it is best to study this book first.

Since you want to learn to write, in addition to writing seal characters, there are also large letters, middle letters, and small letters, all of which should be written. When I was a child, I wrote it all. As for learning one foot and two feet of words, there is a very simple way: then you can use large bricks to write, usually put four large bricks together, make a table, and use a shelf to stand up, can also be used as a table; to learn to write large characters, but it is very convenient, and one thing can be used for two purposes.

Seal books, lishu books, and even xingshu must be written, and everything must be learned; all inscriptions must also be read, at least to browse. After learning the above methods for a period of time, it is possible to write one or one. This is the method of bo and covenant.

As for the pen? There are many kinds of calculations, such as sheep, wolves, rabbits and so on. Generally, sheep and sheep can be used, purple and wolf, and there is no limit to which one. The most important thing to pay attention to is that you must use a large pen to write large characters, and you must not use a small pen! Writing big letters with a small pen, that is very wrong. It is better to write small characters with a large pen than to write large characters with a small pen.

There is also the problem of paper. The glossy paper sold on the market is cheap, but it's too smooth to write. If you use locally produced coarse paper, there is no such problem. What I mean: Coarse paper is available for upper graders and glossy paper for lower grades.

The paper with the lattice used here is not very suitable, and it is different from the paper of the nine square grids in our past. As far as my habits are concerned, the method I use the nine-square grid is not like this. Now draw it below and explain my usage:

If you use this kind of lattice paper, it is very convenient to write words, so that each word has rules and rules to keep. For example, when writing in block letters, the place where the two lines intersect becomes a cross shape, so that the upper and lower left and right are not symmetrical. Know that writing is not always casual. The status of each word should be very correct, not biased to the left or the right, not up and down, and there must be certain standards. Because the line has a central point, when you first learn to pay attention to this line, then write it, it will naturally be moderate and very "falling".

When you usually write, when you write this word, your eyes focus on this word, and the rest of the words do not matter, which is also wrong. Because the words above are related to the words below—that is, the whole part of the word, whether up, down, left or right, must be coherent. This is very important and requires great attention. You can't just write one word and leave it alone. Because writing should make all of them cooperate, you can't just look at every word.

One more thing to note: when we write, we must not lean on the table, we must make the wrist hang high, we can use ruyi. It is good to hang the wrist in the middle of the writing, and if the elbow is to lean on, it is no harm. As for Xiao Kai, you can lean on the table and don't have to hang your wrist.
