Recently, IC Insights, a semiconductor market research organization, released the latest research report, announcing the world's top ten semiconductor manufacturers, Samsung, Intel, and SK Hynix ranked in the top three.

Overall, excluding chip-only foundries, the world's top 50 semiconductor suppliers accounted for 89% of the global semiconductor market revenue of US$614.6 billion in 2021, an increase of 8 percentage points from 81% of the top 50 companies in 2010.

Among them, the top five, top ten and top twenty-five semiconductor suppliers accounted for 8, 9 and 11 percentage points of revenue in the global semiconductor market in 2021 compared with 2010, respectively. And more mergers and acquisitions are expected in the coming years. IC Insights believes that the results of the integration may push the share of top suppliers to a higher level.

The report pointed out that in 1993, Intel became the number one supplier with 9.2% of the global semiconductor market revenue. In 2017, Intel's revenue accounted for 13.9% of the global semiconductor market. However, in contrast, Samsung's global semiconductor market revenue accounted for 14.8%, which made Samsung rank first in the global semiconductor supplier ranking in 2017, and the main reason for Samsung's arch on the leader is that Samsung has rapidly increased its market share, rather than Intel losing market share.

In 2019, memory market revenue fell sharply by 32%, which led to a 12% decline in overall semiconductor market revenue. And because 77% of Samsung Semiconductor's revenue that year came from memory. Therefore, in the case of the collapse of the memory market, it dragged down Samsung's semiconductor revenue by 29%. Although Intel's semiconductor revenue was relatively flat in 2019, in the case of Samsung's revenue decline, Intel regained the throne of the world's first semiconductor supplier in that year. However, Samsung's semiconductor revenue increased by 33% in 2021, leading Intel by only 1%, making Samsung back to the position of the world's largest semiconductor supplier.

IC Insights also emphasized that in addition to pure chip foundries, there are two new semiconductor suppliers that have entered the top ten in 2021, namely MediaTek in Taiwan and AMD in the United States. The two companies in the 2021 rankings replaced Apple and Infineon in the top ten. Among them, MediaTek's revenue increased by a staggering 61%, making the company's ranking rise by three places, from the original 11th to the 8th position. AMD's revenue in 2021 increased by 68%, and the ranking also rose from the original 14th to 10th.

Overall, in 2021, 5 of the world's top ten semiconductor suppliers will be chipless IC design companies, two more than in 2019. Further back to the 2008 ranking, when only Qualcomm's chipless IC design company was on the list. Specifically, the revenue of the top ten semiconductor suppliers in 2021 will need to reach the level of $16.4 billion to squeeze into the rankings.
