Recently, we learned from relevant sources that Toyota is investing $383 million in its U.S. plant to prepare for new engine production. It is reported that the investment will be used in the production facility of the new four-cylinder engine, which will be used in traditional combustion engines and hybrid vehicles.
The Huntsville, Alabama plant will receive the largest investment, $222 million, to create a new four-cylinder line for conventional fuel and hybrid engines. The plant currently has an annual capacity of 900,000 engines, and the investment will include an expansion of 10,600 square meters.
The Troy, Missouri plant will receive a $109 million investment to provide new equipment to manufacture cylinder heads, while the Jackson, Tennessee plant will receive $36 million for the new four-cylinder engine block.
Finally, Toyota will invest $16 million at its largest plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, to further expand engine production. The plant received an investment of $461 million in October 2021 and currently produces approximately 600,000 powertrains per year for Toyota and Lexus models.
Toyota currently has four-cylinder engines with displacements of 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 liters, excluding the four-cylinder horizontally opposed engine built by Subaru in the GR86. The investment suggests that Toyota is working on a new engine, but Toyota declined to provide any additional information.
Toyota also has some engines in the experimental stages, such as the Corolla racing hydrogen-powered three-cylinder internal combustion engine that has been testing, and the GR Yaris three-cylinder engine that uses synthetic fuel. It is not impossible for Toyota to adopt these designs and optimize them for the streets, and we will continue to pay attention to them.
