How long can an electric vehicle battery last? Tesla's former CTO: 15 years!

For consumers who are interested in buying new energy vehicles, the most concerned thing is not only the mileage, but also the life of the battery, how many years can it run? How many tens of thousands of kilometers?

From the overall market point of view, most of today's electric vehicles use ternary lithium batteries or lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are generally considered to have a service life of about 8-15 years.

Recently, Tesla's former CTO (chief technology officer) JB Straubel proposed when talking about electric vehicles that he believes that the battery of an electric vehicle should last for 15 years in most cases, depending on the utilization rate.

He also said that the life of the battery may also depend on the life of the vehicle, as people are less likely to put new batteries on the old car.

It is worth mentioning that only tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles enter the scrapping period every year. That number will rise to millions in 15 years.

Straubel is an expert in batteries, and he was responsible for Tesla's battery development until 2019.

After leaving Tesla, he founded a new company, Redwood Materials, which is currently developing a new process for recycling materials, with a focus on electric vehicle batteries.

Straubel's new venture has partnered with Ford and Volvo to recycle eviction battery packs as they are scrapped.
