Beginning in 1978, the modern martial art Sanda movement began to recover and develop. For a long time, the sport of Wushu Sanda was limited to male athletes until the 2001 Women's Wushu Sanda Pilot Tournament.

First, why set up a women's martial arts sanda program?

The entry of martial arts into the Olympic Games is the goal of several generations of Martial Artists in China. The Olympic Charter contains the phrase "both male and female athletes should be treated equally", and the martial arts sport of Sanda is incomplete without the participation of female athletes. In order to promote the development of the wushu sanda women's program, the Wushu Sports Management Center of the State General Administration of Sport and the Chinese Wushu Association have done a lot of work.

In January 2001, the Women's Sanda Experimental Tournament was held; in 2002, the first National Women's Wushu Sanda Championship was held; in 2003, the Chinese Wushu Sanda King Championship was held; in the ring of the Chinese Wushu Sanda King Championship, the figure of female athletes appeared for the first time; at the 10th National Games in 2005, the women's Sanda project was officially entered the National Games, with a gold medal. This gold medal at the National Games became the basis for the development of the women's martial arts sanda program.

Second, the current situation of the development of women's martial arts sanda in China.

For more than 20 years, the development of Chinese martial arts sanda projects has been very fast. However, the development of women's programs has been relatively slow. For example, in May 2021, a total of 32 provincial, municipal and autonomous region teams participated in the National Games qualification selection competition, but only 21 teams participated in the "Women's Team" event. Many provinces and cities have not yet established "women's teams". What is the reason behind the uneven development of the women's martial arts sanda program in various provinces and cities across the country?

In order for provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions to establish independent "women's sanda teams", they need to consider comprehensively, especially the cost of input. From the 48 kg to the 75 kg class, the National Women's Wushu Sanda Championship has a total of seven levels. If all the teams at these levels are established, training venues, infrastructure, human resources investment, etc., is a big expense. However, only 1 gold medal was set up in the women's martial arts sanda event of the National Games, which was not enough for the provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. If the current gold medal becomes two or three, the domestic women's martial arts sanda project will show a different development situation.

Third, the problems presented by the martial arts sanda training system and competition rules.

Compared with 20 years ago, the training system of the Chinese martial arts sanda program has made great progress. However, compared with other sports such as taekwondo, we need to improve the degree of scientificization and standardization. A movement of people, the whole world is unified, there are standard training methods. We still lack this aspect, and the degree of standardization is not as high as that of others.

Our training and teaching need to develop from "empirical" to "scientific". It's not that our "empirical" approach to teaching is bad. If the "empirical" and "scientific" teaching is integrated and applied to the extreme, it will bring great improvement to the development of our project. Another point is that the combination of "academic research" and "teaching practice" in our martial arts Sanda is not very close. The results of many academic research are difficult to apply to practice, and the two cannot be well transformed.

Competition rules, like "guiding lights", have a guiding effect on the development of sports competitions. If we athletes want to win games, coaches need to study how to practice under the guidance of "rules". The leaders of the Wushu Sports Management Center of the State General Administration of Sport and the Chinese Wushu Association attach great importance to the development and improvement of the rules of the Wushu Sanda Competition, and often organize relevant experts to conduct discussions. The current martial arts sanda competition rules are still very good overall. But we still need to work on how to improve the viewing of the martial arts sanda program and increase the intensity of the competition.

Outlook: The next 20 years

Reporter: Shen guidance, from picking up the Shanghai women's sanda team to teach whip, it has been twenty years now. How do you want the martial arts sanda to change in the next two decades?

The Shanghai team competed in the final of the National Games

Shen Xuejun: Although it has undergone many years of development, in the "big family" of modern competitive sports, martial arts sanda is still a "young" project. Martial arts sanda needs to establish a perfect training system, a perfect scientific research theory system, a perfect business system, and gradually mature, develop and grow.

Since the "Sino-US Confrontation" in the 1990s, commercial events such as Sanda Wang, Wulin Feng, and Kunlun Duel have gradually developed, which has played a good role in publicizing our project. If the direction is right and we continue to work tirelessly, our martial arts sanda will become a brand with high participation for the whole people. Its commercialization will also increase, and the brand value will be reflected. I believe that more entrepreneurs will pay attention and invest in it.

If one day, our athletes don't have to "change their sports" to participate in other events (free fighting, MMA), athletes from other sports will come to our Sanda competitions. Then, the martial art Sanda is truly worthy of the status of China's national essence.

After another twenty years of development, I hope that the martial arts Sanda will become a well-known brand in the world of martial arts, which is my lifelong expectation in the martial arts Sanda project.
