IT House reported on March 2 that a YouTuber successfully reduced the size of apple M1 Mac mini by 78% and DIY supported MagSafe magnetic charging.
Apple launched the M1 Mac mini in November 2020, which retains the classic design it has been using since 2010. Subsequent disassembly revealed that a large amount of space inside the M1 Mac mini was unused.
So Snazzy Labs' YouTube anchor Quinn Nelson took the lead in redesigning the internal structure to minimize the M1 Mac mini and put it in a brand new shell.
Since most of the Mac mini's space is occupied by a 150W power supply, Nelson replaced it with an external Microsoft 65W Surface power supply with a modified MagSafe 2 interface.
Nelson then used 3D printing resin to create a new, smaller casing for the Mac mini, using a hole design similar to the 2019 Mac Pro to enhance heat dissipation. In addition, Nelson relocated parts such as antennas and power buttons to the new housing and removed the fans for the Mac mini.
The result was surprising, with the modified M1 Mac mini being 78% smaller than the original.
IT House learned that while the new design removed the fan, the Nelson test showed little change in performance, and the benchmark was almost identical to the original.
