Let the ICT bird grow wings of digital energy

After two years, MWC2022 is back in Barcelona, bringing the latest technology vane and industry barometer to the global ICT industry. Looking back, you will find that there is a topic that has been repeatedly mentioned in this year's MWC, and the popularity even exceeds that of new mobile phone products - that is, energy saving and emission reduction.

Today, carbon neutrality has become a global common proposition and the responsibility of the entire era. The global sense of urgency towards the dual carbon goal is also revealed in MWC, which can be said that there is no enterprise that does not say energy saving, and no product that does not focus on environmental protection. Among the many activities during the MWC, there was one of the most direct, concrete, and zero-distance summits on the issue of double carbon in the digital process, that is, Huawei Digital Energy hosted a summit forum with the theme of "Lighting up a Low-Carbon And Intelligent Future" at the W Hotel in Barcelona (Global Digital Power Forum 2022).

Fang Liangzhou, Vice President of Huawei Digital Energy, Luis Neves, CEO of GeSI, Global Electronic Sustainability Initiative, Bernd Leven, Energy Director of Vodafone Group, and Maria Yolanda C. Crisanto, Chief Sustainability Officer of Globe, attended the forum to share green innovation in the ICT industry and how digital systems embrace the era of carbon neutrality. At the end of the forum, Huawei also participated in the "Lighting up the Future of Green Development in the Industry" ceremony with customers and partners.

Facing a deterministic future for a smart world, the world must first pave a green and environmentally friendly double carbon road. The development and spread of networks, computing, and the digital economy cannot come at the expense of high energy consumption.

At this summit, Huawei Digital Energy showed Barcelona and the global ICT industry how to make digital technology a bird grow digital energy wings.

A carbon neutral mission for the digital world

In the past, the communications and IT industry was more likely to use energy conservation and emission reduction as a plus point than a necessary capability. But this situation has changed completely today, and carbon neutrality has become an urgent common task for the world, and it has become a task that the ICT industry must face and complete with all its might.

From a data perspective alone, the digital technology system does not seem to have to bear particularly large responsibilities in the face of carbon neutrality goals. According to the International Energy Agency, global carbon emissions mainly come from electricity, industry, transportation and other industries. The ICT sector accounts for only 1.97% of global carbon emissions. Relying on less than 2% of carbon emissions, the ICT industry supports a digital economy that accounts for more than 50% of global GDP.

But what we should see is that with the advent of the data flood and the intelligent era, the ICT industry will develop rapidly. In this case, priority must be given to the top-level design of the carbon neutrality goal of the ICT system; on the other hand, the ICT industry can make it possible to achieve a variety of industries and promote a reduction of 20% of global carbon emissions. This process must be based on the high energy saving and emission reduction capabilities of the ICT industry itself.

It can be said that the carbon neutrality of the ICT industry and the digital technology system is the hub of the whole body under the global dual-carbon goal. Facing this era goal and global demand, Huawei Digital Energy is committed to integrating digital technology and power electronics technology to promote the upgrading of a series of digital energy industries such as green ICT energy infrastructure. Huawei's digital energy unveiled at MWC2022 is not only an industrial bright color, but also the general trend of ict industry development.

At the summit, Fang Liangzhou, Vice President of Huawei Digital Energy, delivered a keynote speech on "Building a Low-Carbon Intelligent Society", in which he said: "Carbon neutrality has become a global consensus, Huawei actively supports and participates in actions to deal with climate change, in order to better help customers achieve the goal of 'carbon neutrality' as soon as possible, Huawei Digital Energy is committed to continuous innovation through the integration of energy flow and information flow around clean power generation, energy digitization, transportation electrification, green ICT energy infrastructure, integrated smart energy, etc. Make life better, business smarter, society more inclusive, and the world greener. ”

Taking the two most important scenarios in the ICT technology system as an example, we can see the business prospects and social value of Huawei's digital energy in the dual-carbon revolution.

Put wireless networks on the road to low carbon

When we live in the world of wireless networks, we enjoy the convenience brought by 5G, but the carbon emissions brought by network base stations are also increasing. According to relevant data, the carbon emissions of network equipment in the use of the process accounted for 80% to 95%, so that the world can continue to enjoy the wireless network dividend, must let the base station embark on the road of low-carbon development.

Huawei Digital Energy's site energy solution can use the low-carbon energy target network as the traction, starting from the three aspects of low-carbon network construction, low-carbon operation, and low-carbon operation and maintenance, to create a full-scenario, full-life cycle site low-carbon solution to help operators add 5G without site energy OPEX.

In the process of network construction, Huawei Digital Energy realizes minimalist deployment through "replacing the cabinet with cabinets" and "replacing cabinets with poles", reducing carbon emissions in the construction and transformation links, while saving the site site, eliminating engineering transformation, and reducing the use of air conditioning in the computer room, so that the site will enter the low-carbon road at the top level planning and design stage.

In the operation link, the "low-carbon" design is carried out through the four nodes of the "send-forward-dump-use" full link to achieve green and efficient full link. Specifically, on the power generation side, the operator's own sites, computer rooms and parks and other resources are used to flexibly deploy solar photovoltaics; on the conversion side, the traditional inefficient modules and multiple sets of power supply deployments are replaced by high-efficiency modules and single systems; on the power consumption side, the accurate metering of single-tenant, single-standard, single-channel loads and the on-demand supply of backup power are realized through intelligent power management units; on the energy storage side, cloud-based intelligent lithium batteries are used to achieve accurate allocation of backup resources through collaboration with power sources and loads.

In the operation and maintenance process, through digital technology, the site power intelligence and operation and maintenance intelligence, energy efficiency and carbon emission visually manageable and excellent, remote operation and maintenance instead of manual operation and maintenance, reduce the risk of downtime and reduce the cost of fault maintenance. In the emergency scenario, the traditional emergency oil machine is replaced by mobile lithium battery to achieve multi-angle low-carbon operation and maintenance.

An operator in Beijing, based on Huawei's "green energy target network" to carry out the whole network planning, carbon emissions will be reduced by 38%, to achieve network evolution without energy OPEX. At the Interop Tokyo exhibition in June 2020, Huawei's smart integrated super station solution won the "Best of Show Award" gold award for "super simple, super converged, super intelligent, and super reliable".

Through site energy solutions, wireless networks will embark on a green and low-carbon road, which is the foundation and lifeblood of the sustainable development of the ICT industry in the future.

Bring the data center to energy-friendly doors

In the face of the data flood and the widespread application of AI technology, computational intensification has become a global priority. In Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, we can see large-scale data center construction and commissioning. In China, the East Digital And Western Computing Project has promoted the construction of a new generation of data centers. The energy optimization and energy friendliness of data centers can be said to provide a guarantee for the world to enter a new era of computing.

Huawei's low-carbon data center solution can create a simplified, green, intelligent, and secure next-generation data center throughout its lifecycle.

In terms of architecture, the data center energy solution achieves simplified delivery through modularization and prefabrication, shortens the data center construction cycle from 20 months to 6 months, and meets the needs of rapid service launch. The assembly rate of prefabricated modular data centers is as high as 97%, there is no "three wastes" in the construction process, the construction water and construction waste are reduced by 80%, the recyclability rate is more than 80%, and the carbon emissions of construction are reduced by 90%, so as to achieve energy-friendly and environmental-friendly throughout the life cycle.

In terms of temperature control, through digitally enhanced iCooling technology and indirect evaporative cooling scheme that maximizes the use of natural cooling sources, it is possible to reduce the PUE of data centers by 8% to 15%.

In terms of operation and maintenance, intelligent O&M technology can realize the autonomous driving of data centers, reducing O&M costs by about 35%. At the same time, through the refinement and intelligence of asset capacity management, the resource utilization rate is effectively improved by about 20%.

In terms of power supply, data center energy solutions can realize the full link of power supply and distribution system visually manageable, AI enables predictive maintenance, to ensure the safe and stable operation of data centers.

In Shaanxi Mobile Xixian Data Center, Huawei FusionDC prefabricated modular data center solution has achieved an on-line delivery time of only 6 months, on-site civil construction and factory module production are carried out at the same time, and there is no toxic substances such as "three wastes" in the construction process, reducing construction water and construction waste, and reducing construction carbon emissions. At the same time, the temperature control system adopts indirect evaporative cooling solution, which achieves an average annual PUE from 1.35 to 1.25, which saves more than 8% of electricity and 40% water compared with the chilled water scheme. It can save nearly 60 million kWh of electricity in 10 years, save more than 400,000 tons of water, and reduce carbon emissions by 27,000 tons. In October 2021, Huawei Data Center Energy won four awards: "Best Data Center Facility Supplier of the Year", "Best Data Center Upgrade Project of the Year", "Best Data Center Power Supply and Distribution Award", and "Best Data Center Temperature Control Innovation Award" in the "DCS Awards". Through the convergence of innovation and collaborative release in multiple technology fields, Huawei can help the world build a next-generation low-carbon data center and ensure that the new computing era is an energy-friendly era.

Let the ICT bird grow wings of digital energy

In addition to site energy and data center energy, Huawei Digital Energy has promoted multi-faceted and multi-dimensional energy transformation in the ICT industry, as well as the meticulous digital transformation of the energy industry.
