Volunteer Diary| Winter Paralympic Village Cable Car not only controls speed, but also "makes room" for wheelchairs

Xu Zeqing, a volunteer for the Winter Olympics at Beijing Second Foreign Chinese College

As the opening of the Winter Paralympic Games draws closer, foreign delegations have been stationed in the Winter Paralympic Villages. For me, who has never served a disabled friend, I have more expectations and more tension about volunteer work.

Volunteer Diary| Winter Paralympic Village Cable Car not only controls speed, but also "makes room" for wheelchairs

On my first day on the job, I received the Chinese delegation. They come to the front desk to inquire about the check-in procedures and other related matters. One of the members of the group enthusiastically asked us if we had been busy or hard lately, and the concern from "our own people" made me feel very kind. I noticed that the color of the Chinese delegation's team uniform was changed from the red of the Winter Olympic Games to the unique green of the Winter Paralympic Games, and the color and id belt of the certificate were also changed from the sky blue of the Winter Olympic Games to the dark green of the Winter Paralympic Games, which echoed with the green team uniform, which could not help but make my eyes light up.

Subsequently, I hosted an elderly disabled group leader. He has no arms, only a metal prosthesis, and a clip at the front to assist him in holding and putting things away. In the pre-job training, volunteers have learned some precautions for serving people with disabilities, but in actual cases, more caution is needed. When handling business for the leader of the regiment, I first asked the other party if he could handle it on his own, and if I needed to help him, I would assist him to complete it. For example, when signing, the head of the regiment said that he was slow to write and wanted me to help him complete the signature, at which time I would provide help and complete his request. Before parting, the regimental commander said to us gratefully: "Thank you volunteers, your service makes me feel very comfortable." Looking forward to seeing you next time! ”

I noticed that the Yanqing Winter Paralympic Village has made great adjustments in its hardware facilities. The Alpine Cable Car is an iconic sight here, and during the Winter Paralympic Games, the cable car is an important tool to the alpine skiing area. Before the start of the race, many athletes will carry huge ski equipment, carry snowboards and skis to take the cable car to train. During the Paralympic Games, in order to make it easier for wheelchair athletes to ride the cable car, Yanqing Winter Paralympic Village is not only equipped with volunteers at the cable car point to assist wheelchair athletes to get on and off the cable car, but also controls the speed of the cable car in the control room to ensure that the disabled athletes can ride the cable car smoothly.

The volunteer in charge of the cable car station told me: "The chairs in the cable car can be retracted upwards to increase the space for wheelchairs in the carriage. Recently, he said, many delegations of alpine skiers have taken the cable car up the mountain to train, "the barrier-free design of the cable car station can ensure that they travel independently." During training, there is usually an escort to help them carry ski equipment and equipment. ”
