Multiple firsts! What will the "all-green" Beijing Winter Olympics look like?

Ice and snow event, stunning the world. Since the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, China's green, shared, open and clean Olympic concept and efficient and safe games services have attracted global attention; in addition to wonderful sports competitions, the green and low carbon of the Beijing Winter Olympics has also attracted people's applause and attention.

The venues of the Beijing Summer Olympic Games have been transformed into Winter Olympic venues, the "Water Cube" has become the "Ice Cube", all venues have full coverage of "green electricity", more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are constantly shuttling, and spectators can quickly reach the venues through public transportation such as subway high-speed rail during the Games... China uses new technologies in the fields of energy, transportation, 5G and other fields to combine green technology with sports, demonstrating the latest achievements of the mainland's scientific and technological strength and green and low-carbon development, and highlighting the Chinese government's firm determination to deal with global climate change.

Multiple firsts! What will the "all-green" Beijing Winter Olympics look like?

As praised by Juan Antonio Samaranch, Chairman of the Coordination Committee of the International Olympic Committee for the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Beijing Winter Olympics will be the first Olympic Games to achieve "all-green", which will have a benchmarking effect on green and sustainable development in the host area and in the wider range.

01

This is a 100% "green electricity" Olympic Games

Once green electricity, can make the main stage of the Winter Olympic Awards Plaza bright for about 22 seconds; once green electricity, can let the chef cook 2 delicious dishes in the "all-electric kitchen" of the Winter Olympic Village; once green electricity, can power the solar inflatable tent heater for about 30-40 minutes... A large part of this continuous stream of green electricity comes from the Renewable Energy Demonstration Zone in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province.

In order to successfully "hold hands" between Zhangjiakou's green power and the Beijing Winter Olympics, the world's first DC power grid project to achieve multi-energy complementarity of wind, light and energy storage - Zhangbei Flexible DC Power Grid Test demonstration project (hereinafter referred to as "Zhangbei Flexible Straight Project") came into being, and all core technologies and key equipment were pioneered in China.

"The Zhangbei Rouzhi Project has built 4 converter stations and a transmission line length of 666 kilometers, connecting hundreds of wind farms and nearly 1,000 photovoltaic power plants in Zhangbei into an organic whole." Li Zhen, deputy director of the UHV AC and DC Operation and Inspection Center of the State Grid Jibei Electric Power Ultra High Voltage Company, said that the Zhangbei Rouzhi Project makes full use of the complementary characteristics of large-scale wind and light in the region and the flexible peak regulation characteristics of the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station to create a flexible and intelligent energy interaction platform, which can transmit 14 billion kWh of clean electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region every year, equivalent to 1/10 of Beijing's electricity consumption, and can fully meet the electricity consumption demand of the Winter Olympic venues totaling 100 million kWh per year.

It is understood that by the end of 2021, the Zhangbei Rouzhi Project has completed a total of 237 million kWh of green electricity trading in the Winter Olympic venues, of which 152 million kWh was sent to the Winter Olympic venues in Beijing and Yanqing. Han Zirong, full-time vice chairman and secretary general of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, said that the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will achieve green power supply for all venues for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, vividly telling the story of China's power grid technology innovation to the world, becoming the biggest highlight of the green Olympics, attracting global attention and admiration.

"When I think of the Winter Olympics using our 'scenery', I am proud of it." In the past few days, watching the Olympic athletes galloping on the field on live TV, Hao Zhiyou, a wind power specialist of The North China Regional Company of Jidian Co., Ltd., has a lot of feelings. Since July 2015, the State Council has officially approved the Development Plan for the Renewable Energy Demonstration Zone in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, and agreed to establish the Zhangjiakou Renewable Energy Demonstration Zone. Through the renewable energy demonstration project, the rich wind and light resources in Zhangjiakou Zhangbei area were converted into clean electricity, ensuring the stable operation of the three major winter Olympic areas of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. Hao Zhiyou participated in the construction of the company's one-million-kilowatt new energy base in Zhangjiakou from the start of construction to the end of 2021 and the whole process from scratch.

Behind the large-scale renewable energy installation, there is a problem of power supply intermittentness and volatility that cannot be underestimated, and in order to achieve the reliability and cleanliness of the power supply of the Winter Olympics at the same time, it is necessary to use green regulation of power supply. To this end, on December 30, 2021, the first two units of the world's largest installed capacity of Hebei Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station were put into operation, which is equivalent to equipping the power grid with a "super charging treasure".

"At present, the No. 1 and No. 10 units that are put into operation first can provide 600,000 kilowatts of output, which can significantly enhance the new energy consumption, system regulation, and power supply capacity of the North China Power Grid, and provide safe and reliable green power for the Beijing Winter Olympics." Peng Bing, head of the Fengning Mechanical and Electrical Installation Standard Project of China Water Conservancy and Hydropower Seventh Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Power Construction, introduced that the total installed capacity of Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station is 3.6 million kilowatts, and the four indicators of installed capacity, energy storage capacity, underground plant scale and underground cavern group size have all created the world's first.

"I never felt that the Winter Olympics were so close to me, and participating in the construction of wind power projects is definitely an experience that I am proud of for a lifetime." What makes Hao Zhiyou and his colleagues even more proud is that with the efforts of Chinese energy people, all 26 venues in the three major competition areas of the Beijing Winter Olympics have achieved 100% green power supply, which is the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, creating an unprecedented "green" sample for the sustainable development of mankind.

02

This is the world's largest hydrogen fuel fleet

Under the "double carbon" goal, this Winter Olympics became the first Olympic event to truly achieve carbon neutrality, of which energy-saving and clean energy vehicles accounted for 84.9% of all event guaranteed vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles performed even more brilliantly.

"From the three hydrogen fuel cell buses at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, to the 196 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and then to the demonstration operation of thousands of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, it shows the development speed of Hydrogen Energy in China and the determination of the Chinese government to carry out energy revolution and reduce carbon dioxide emissions." Mao Zongqiang, a professor at the Institute of Nuclear energy and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University and vice chairman of the International Hydrogen Energy Association, said so.

According to the data of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and more than 30 hydrogen refueling stations will be operated in demonstration operation of the Winter Olympic Games. Models include hydrogen fuel cell buses, hydrogen fuel cell cars, hydrogen fuel cell special vehicles such as snow wax cars, etc. Among them, the snow wax car is a special support vehicle for snowboarding for skiers, and can be started normally at -34 ° C.

Think about the more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles shuttling and serving the venues of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. This also means that the world's largest fuel cell vehicle demonstration operation is being staged at the Beijing Winter Olympics at this moment.

As a subdivision track for new energy vehicles, the preferred scenario for the application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is the commercial field. It is understood that the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles serving the Winter Olympics take buses as the main model, a total of 816 buses, and the brands cover Futian, Yutong, Zhongtong, Geely, etc., which can be said to be a comprehensive display of the "hydrogen" strength of car companies.

Liu Jihong, vice president of research and development of Foton Automobile Ouhui Bus Division and president of the Technology Research Institute, told reporters that Ouhui Bus provided 515 hydrogen fuel buses for the Winter Olympics (260 in Beijing Yanqing Division, 35 in Beijing, and 220 in Zhangjiakou Division), accounting for 63% of the overall hydrogen fuel bus support models, including 40 restructured welfare vehicles to serve passengers with limited mobility. It also set a record for the largest and largest number of models ever recorded in the history of the hydrogen bus service for international sports events.

The hydrogen fuel vehicle large-scale "participation" in the Winter Olympics, where does the challenge come from? The relevant person in charge of Yutong Bus said that the challenge comes from the guarantee of vehicle operation stability. On the one hand, the low temperature around the Winter Olympics area adds difficulties to the stability of vehicle operation, and how to ensure that the performance of the vehicle in the low temperature environment is still stable and reliable is a challenge for the service guarantee team. On the other hand, the operation of hydrogen fuel buses has high requirements for hydrogen reactors, hydrogen refueling stations, vehicle accessories and other related supporting facilities, and it is necessary to make adequate preparations.

In Mao Zongqiang's view, although the cold and low temperature in Zhangjiakou is a major test for lithium battery vehicles, it is "completely different" for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that can be started normally at minus 30 or 40 degrees Celsius. The main challenge of hydrogen fuel vehicles in this large-scale service to the Winter Olympics is "the world's unprecedented large-scale hydrogen fuel cell vehicle organization and unprecedented epidemic prevention and control". This challenge includes not only the hydrogenation, operation, deployment and maintenance of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but also the epidemic prevention work of vehicles, operation and maintenance personnel and passengers.

It is understood that in order to ensure the safe and stable supply of hydrogen energy, there are more than 30 hydrogen refueling stations for demonstration operation at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. For example, PetroChina's Hebei Prince Edward City Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Futian Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Jinlong Integrated Energy Service Station and Hebei Chongli North Oil hydrogen joint construction station and other four hydrogen refueling stations; Sinopec's Beijing Qingyuan Street Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Wangquanying Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Yanhua Xinglong Oil Hydrogen Joint Construction Station, Hebei Chongli Xiwanzi Hydrogen Refueling Station, etc.

At the same time, with the opportunity of the Winter Olympics, hydrogen energy models will be understood and recognized by more consumers. In fact, under the continuous help of favorable policies and the promotion of the "double carbon" goal, the hydrogen energy industry has already ushered in a development boom and has become a new outlet.

From March 2021, hydrogen energy was officially included in the draft outline of the "14th Five-Year Plan" to December 2021, the "14th Five-Year" Industrial Green Development Plan issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposed to not only accelerate hydrogen energy technology innovation and infrastructure construction, but also promote the diversified use of hydrogen energy. By the end of 2021, 16 provinces and municipalities across the country, including Beijing, Shandong, Hebei, Tianjin, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Ningxia, have formulated hydrogen energy development plans.

In the view of Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Vehicle Market Information Joint Association, the large-scale operation of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles during the Winter Olympics is mainly to accumulate research and development experience for enterprises and industries, support the follow-up research and development and demonstration operation of the industry, and the main challenge of follow-up is how to expand the scope of use of products.

"The success of the large-scale application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the Winter Olympics also indicates the bright prospects of the national hydrogen fuel cell city demonstration group project in mainland China." Combined with the display of hydrogen energy in the summer of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the successful display of the Beijing Winter Olympics in the cold winter will increase the world's new understanding of hydrogen energy and help promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry. Mao Zongqiang finally said.
