U.S. Stock Research has learned that video game sales fell year-on-year for the third consecutive month in January, as falling content and accessory revenue could not be saved by still-strong hardware sales.

According to npdd group data, overall sales declined slightly, down 2 percent from January 2021 to $4.684 billion, with video game content sales down 4 percent to $4,109 million. Accessory sales fell 15 percent to $185 million, while hardware sales relied on continued efforts from Sony and Microsoft's new generation of consoles to rise 22 percent to $390 million. After breaking the six-month winning streak, sales began to decline from November, even with a key holiday shopping season. Specifically, despite Nintendo's Continued Strength in Switch, the best-selling platform is Sony's PlayStation 5, while Microsoft's Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller kicked off the year as the best-selling accessory. On the gaming side, Pokémon Saga: NTDOY replaces Call of Duty: Vanguard (NASDAQ: ATVI) as the best-selling product of the month. Monster Hunter: Rise (OTCPK: CCOEY) jumped from 94th to 3rd, and God of War (SONY) in 2018 jumped from 146th to 5th. The 4th place is madden NFL 22 (EA). Mobile gaming, on the other hand, saw a 6.8 percent year-over-year decline in mobile spending in January after record growth for most of the time. However, aside from last year's COVID-19 push that made it perform strong, this is actually typical of mobile gaming spending in January.
