According to the requirements of the latest version of the "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", passenger cars produced from January 1, 2022 are required to be mandatorily installed with EDR.
Why do I need to install EDR?
Where does mandatory EDR come from, in April 2021, the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Notice on Matters Related to the Implementation of GB 7258-2017 No. 2 Amendment Order", supplementing the "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", and the notice is clear: From January 1, 2022, all newly produced passenger cars in China will be mandatorily equipped with EDR, or equipped with DVR that meets the regulations.
EDR is the abbreviation of Event Data Recorder, Chinese meaning automobile event data recording system, which is mainly used to record the key operation data of the car in the three stages of vehicle before, during and after the collision. The information it records reproduces the course of an accident for automotive accident analysis and is also known as the "black box" of the car.
Can a dashcam be replaced?
According to the requirements of the national standard, if equipped with an on-board video recording system that meets the provisions of GB/T 38892, it should be deemed to meet the requirements. As a result, there are many claims that the driving recorder currently on sale is installed and can meet the requirements.
In fact, most of the driving recorders on the market basically do not meet the requirements of GB/T 38892. The main reason is that GB/T 38892 requires dvR video stream data to overlay the vehicle's vehicle identification code (VIN), which is not satisfied by existing dashcams.
However, compared with EDR, which requires hardware costs, the cost of VDR to meet the requirements of the national standard is simpler. After all, the cost of a driving recorder that costs more than 100 yuan, plus the frame number watermark, has hardly changed much. It is foreseeable that many models that did not have EDR installed in the original model may use the form of DVR to transition.
What is the current state of EDR?
At present, the allocation of EDR in some overseas markets has been relatively mature. Among them, the U.S. automotive safety technical regulations require that after September 2014, all vehicles sold in the United States need to be equipped with EDR, and by 2019, 99% of new cars listed in the United States have been installed with EDR; South Korean stock cars and new cars also mandatory to install EDR in December 2015.
In terms of the domestic market, the previous EDR multi-purpose commercial vehicle field, before the passenger car installation volume was relatively limited. Relevant data show that in 2020, there were only 1.3571 million new cars equipped with EDR equipment in domestic new cars, and the market penetration rate was 7.12%. In addition to BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and other luxury models, Haval, Xiaopeng, BYD, Weilai, Wuling Hongguang MINEV and other independent brand models are also equipped.
The reporter learned that since last year, bydir and other car brands have been equipped with EDR equipment.
Will consumers spend more money on EDR devices when they buy a car? A car company staff revealed to reporters, "Last year, a number of accidents in intelligent new cars were hyped up, in order to avoid those controversial points, so most new energy models have EDR functions." And now many new cars have intelligent upgrades, recording data information such as vehicle throttle stamping and steering angle, which will be kept and read when needed. Therefore, the new EDR national standard, it is still easy for everyone to meet, especially new energy models."
At the same time, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association, the cost of EDR is relatively low, that is, the concept of 300 to 500 yuan, and manufacturers can overcome this impact without increasing the cost of car purchases for consumers.
