Ski jump + Shougang Industrial Site - a highlight of the Beijing Winter Olympics

At the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Shougang Ski Jumping Platform undertook two competitions: the snowboard jump and the freestyle ski jump. The Snowboard Jump was a new addition to the previous Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, while the Freestyle Ski Jump was a new event added to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, producing four gold medals in both competitions.

The big jump is located in the north area of Shougang Industrial Park, and the entire competition area is distributed from north to south with Shougang's original power plant, main plant of power plant, cooling tower, main plant of oxygen production and other old industrial buildings. The total length of the big jump track is 164 meters, the widest part of the track is 34 meters, the total height is 60 meters, and the height of the race starting platform is 48 meters.

In terms of design concept, the Shougang Ski Jump borrows the flying elements in the Dunhuang murals. The reason why it can become the only snow competition venue in the urban area of the Beijing Winter Olympics is that the ski jumping project is a sports project loved by young people; the second is that it is selected in the Shougang Industrial Park, which can fully reflect the concept of sustainable development of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, perfectly integrate the winter Olympic culture with the Shougang industrial site, and create a classic case of the perfect integration of oriental culture and the culture of the old industrial sites in Beijing.

In the park, the main structure of the main plant of the original oxygen plant of Shougang has not changed, and the steel bracket of the upper triangle and the horizontal crane beam below have been retained, and then repaired on this basis to make it meet the requirements of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. During the competition, it will become a place to serve spectators. The spectator experience area on the ground floor provides a 1,000 square meter audience rest space, and the second to fifth floors will be the office of the game management and will be able to provide comfortable indoor space for the staff.

Shougang cooling pump station has also been rebuilt into a security inspection area for spectators to enter during the game, the original main structure and the outer cover of the roof cooling tower have been retained, the first floor is used as a ticket service channel for spectators, and the second floor has become a resting place for competition managers and staff. The three floors retain their original functions, and the four cooling units will provide energy, making Shougang's industrial heritage and the operational needs of the Winter Olympic Games perfectly combined.

In the process of transforming the old industrial park of Shougang, many difficulties were also encountered. The original plants are industrial buildings built on the principle of industrial production, and the transformation is to make them a supporting functional building to meet the needs of the Olympic Games, so the renovation project must meet the requirements of the civil building code design specifications, and at the same time meet the professional needs of the Olympic Games.

The main body of the Shougang Ski Jump is a steel structure, with a total length of 160 meters, a maximum width of 34.14 meters, and a height of 49.11 meters. As one of the important legacies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, it will continue to retain its sports competition function after the games, which will be used to host world-class snowboarding and ski jumping competitions and training tasks, becoming the world's first permanently reserved and used ski jumping venue.

How to understand that the Shougang Big Jump platform draws on the flying elements in the Mural paintings of Dunhuang in China in terms of shape and design?

Xu Yan, head of the Shougang Big Jump Service Department of Shougang Real Estate, said that on the one hand, the curve of the flying sky in the Dunhuang mural is more in line with the curve of the Shougang Ski Jump. On the other hand, the meaning of flying sky in Chinese characters, and the English word for big jumping platform, have the image of leaping in the air and flying upwards.

Several cooling water towers next to the Shougang Ski Jump will be projected on the surface of the Dunhuang Flying Mural during the competition as a background for the Ski Jump. Not only that, in addition to the ski jump, the design plan of the new venues of the Beijing Winter Olympics has made full use of and inherited the traditional Chinese culture as much as possible.

For example, the talent public rental housing project in Beijing Winter Olympic Village adopts the courtyard shape system of Beijing Courtyard, and the houses are arranged in three or four, and the middle is enclosed into a courtyard to form the basic unit of the household. At the same time, in the central plot, through the setting up of garden landscape sketches, residents can turn around in the green corridor and see the ice map elements of the Qianlong period.

The courtyard pattern of Yanqing Winter Olympic Village is also full of Chinese flavor, it adopts the decentralized, semi-open courtyard pattern of mountain villages, built from north to south along the terrain, and forms a "dialogue" with the surrounding mountain-shaped water potential.

The main building of the National Ski Jumping Center in Zhangjiakou Winter Olympic Area is also built by relying on the natural drop of the mountain, in terms of design, the shape of the traditional Chinese mascot "Ruyi" is integrated into the S-shaped curve of the jumping table profile, so it is called "Snow Ruyi".

Regarding the relationship between Dunhuang Feitian and Shougang Ski Jump, Zhang Li, a professor at the Design Department of Tsinghua University who is responsible for the overall design of Shougang Big Jump, explained that there are two main considerations, one is that the English name of the project is big, and the reason why it is called "big" is because this project is the largest one of the highest heights in the snow jumping project of the Winter Olympics; in addition, look at the side curve of the Shougang Big Jump, and then look at the process of the athletes' competition is to first accelerate the slide, then rise from the jumping platform, and then land. The whole flow curve and the streamer image in the flying mural are very well matched, so the inspiration is born.

The design team of the Shougang Giant Jump can be called a "multinational combination", including the team of the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy, who remodeled the Michelin factory in Turin, Italy, and is now one of the best examples of industrial plant transformation in the world. Another is a Belgian structural designer in Beijing, who is very good at creativity in steel structures, and the new Shougang Bridge is his design work. In addition, there are foreign track designers and snowmaking designers recommended by the International Snow Federation, bringing together a total of six or seven foreign experts.

The north side of the Shougang Big Jump is Shijingshan, and there are four 70-meter-high cooling towers in the core area of the park, and the south side of the Big Jump is the new Shougang Bridge across the Yongding River, and the Shougang Ski Jump will form a magnificent skyline on the east bank of the Yongding River. What is even better is that in the design of the competition area, many constructions of Shougang's old industries have been considered as landscape sketches in the competition area, providing a soft and intimate urban space for the citizens, and becoming a representative landscape of the perfect integration of the city's old industrial heritage culture and the Olympic culture.

After the Winter Olympics, shougang park will be an open area for the general public and become a place for tourism and mass sports and fitness. At the same time, Shougang Big Jump can also host the World Cup, the World Championships and commercial competitions such as Boiling Snow. Outside of winter, it can be used as a sports venue for grass skiing, water skiing, BMX, etc.

Professor Zhang Li said that in the history of the Olympic Games, it takes three conditions to realize the post-game utilization of venues, the first is to have a good location and convenient transportation; the second is to have a very good mass base, that is, the surrounding population is larger, especially the scale of sports enthusiasts; the third is to have a sufficiently rich story background, which determines whether it is attractive or not. At present, shougang park has all three have been equipped.
