Beijing, 27 Feb (Xinhua) -- The Beijing Winter Olympics have come to an end. Gu Ailing and Su Yiming respectively won a gold in the Shougang Ski Jump "Snow Flying Sky", which completed its mission at the Beijing Winter Olympics. In the future, as an Olympic legacy, "Snow Flying" will become the world's first permanently retained and used ski jumping venue, which will continue to be used for competitions and training and will be open to the public.

Zhang Li, Dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University and torchbearer of the Beijing Winter Olympics, as the chief planner of the Zhangjiakou Competition Area of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the chief designer of the Shougang Ski Jump in beijing, presided over the planning and design of major projects such as the zhangjiakou division master plan and the prince town ice and snow town planning, the national Nordic biathlon center, and the Shougang ski jump center.

"As a native of Beijing, I grew up in Shougang, and the cooling tower is an extension of the Beijing skyline, which is the impression of Shougang when I was a child. Today, Shougang is the epitome of Beijing's urban renewal. Zhang Li said that he had the privilege of personally experiencing the design of the Venues of the Beijing Winter Olympics and contributing to the sustainable development of world architecture, and he was proud of Beijing and Shougang.

The Shougang Ski Jump, which stands in a corner of Beijing's Shijingshan District, is the venue for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where two events, the Snowboard Jump and the Freestyle Ski Jump, resulted in four gold medals for men and women. Gu Ailing and Su Yiming have won two of the gold medals, and as a result, the Shougang Ski Jump has become the "double gold" blessed land of the Chinese team.

Under the blue sky, the jumping platform, several cooling towers and large chimneys built in the old industrial park of the discontinued Shougang City fused the "industrial punk" wind with the elements of the Winter Olympics and snow, reflecting the value of the transformation of industrial heritage sites, and was praised by athletes and journalists from many countries during the game.

The design inspiration of "Snow Flying Sky" comes from the alignment of the profile curve of the platform jumping competition with the image of Dunhuang's "Flying Sky" streamer. In Zhang Li's view, expressing the "Chinese romance" behind traditional culture is one of the important topics in the design of the Venues of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

"Athletes go from skidding to jumping, tumbling, landing, and jumping into the air to the maximum. The flying streamers in the Dunhuang murals of the World Cultural Heritage are highly recognizable and the best carrier for expressing dynamic curves. The elegant and smooth shape of the building constructed by the streamer curve conveys the 'Chinese romance'. Zhang Li said.

The unique value of the fusion of traditional culture and architecture can closely connect people. The building itself is complex, in addition to conforming to the architectural logic, the design also needs to take into account the aesthetics, and take into account the life close to ordinary people.

"Some Winter Olympics are known as extreme sports. The big jumping stadium is for the sports 'superman' during the service competition, not for ordinary 'ordinary people'. Zhang Li said, but if the sports facilities are only used by "Superman", it is difficult to integrate with public life after the games, which is why the Olympic venues are often idle or demolished after the event.

In Zhang Li's view, the trend of sports venue design in the world is "getting closer and closer to everyday", because sports itself is a way of daily life, and venues are shifting from serving professional large-scale events to serving daily use.

"We adhere to the sustainable development concept of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, proposing that the 'Superman' venue should be closer to the 'ordinary people', not only for the time of the game, but also for the post-game design." Zhang Li told reporters that at present, the competitive point of global architectural design is how to understand and express sustainable development, and how to bring more equitable, environmentally friendly, low-carbon and more sustainable changes to social life.

The sustainability of the Shougang Ski Jump is reflected in the permanent combination of youth sports and industrial heritage. Zhang Li said that the "fans" of the ski jumping sport are mostly cool young people, drinking beer and watching competitions, and the Shougang Industrial Heritage Area by the Yongding River, cooling towers, cooling pools, blast furnaces, silos, the scene is just cool.

The story of Shougang's transformation is the medium for the reuse of industrial heritage. As a century-old industrial enterprise, it has brought great development to Beijing during the industrialization period, and has also become the leader of urban renewal in the post-industrial era.

"My biggest feeling is that our generation of architectural design practitioners has witnessed the transformation of China from the old development concept to the new development concept. I have the privilege of sharing this transformation with the world in the form of architecture. Zhang Li said.

In the old industrial park of Shougang, from the towering cooling tower to the ski jumping platform with a beautiful arc "Snow Flying Sky", this building of different historical periods will not only be during the Winter Olympic Games, but also after the Games, to the people who come to participate in the competition and the people who come here for sightseeing, silently "telling" the "past and present life" of a city, "telling" the changes and developments of the times and years...
