"Traditional lighting design mainly focuses on the carrier, that is, the object being photographed, and we pay more attention to people." As the person in charge of the lighting design of the Shougang Competition area of the Winter Olympic Games, Zhang Xin, director of the China Lighting Society and long-term associate professor of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, also shoulders the work of lighting design and chongli lighting coordination in Yanqing.

In his view, unlike ordinary lighting design, the lighting design of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games area fully considers the post-game utilization and urban development, and pays more attention to the sustainable design requirements.

The shape design of the ski jump "Snow Flying Sky" comes from Dunhuang's Flying Streamer. In order to make the "streamer" truly present a flowing and flexible feeling, Zhang Xin has made careful planning in lighting planning and design.

"In terms of lighting planning, the landscape lighting of the ski jump should be dominant, it is the 'emitter' of light, and the surrounding oxygen plants and cooling towers play the 'receiver' of light by reducing the brightness to the distance and strictly controlling the light color (4500K). In terms of design, the three-layer streamer increases the brightness layer by layer from bottom to top, showing the upward momentum, metaphorically the existence of a moon-like natural light source at high altitude. Zhang Xin said.

Since the audience is looking up when watching the ski jump, this requires that the lights of the "streamers" must not only be facing upwards, but also eliminate glare. To this end, Zhang Xin's team decided to "hide" the lamp into the "streamer".

However, it is not enough to "hide" it. "Because the width, tilt angle and height of the 'streamer' are continuously variable, it is necessary not only to ensure that the entire light does not interfere with the athletes' competition, but also to meet the multi-perspective viewing needs of broadcasters, referees and live audiences." Zhang Xin said.

For him, the lighting design of the "streamer" is "a hammer deal", "the most important thing about lighting is to adjust the lamp, because once the light is loaded into the 'streamer', there is no chance to adjust it, we must adjust the lamp to the most reasonable angle on the ground."

In order to ensure the success of one time, Zhang Xin's team not only conducted in-depth research on the installation position, method, angle, color temperature, power, and depth of the shading cylinder of the lamp, but also specially produced two "streamer" foot gauge models. After repeated experiments, they finally determined the final parameters. Standing at the foot of the "streamer" and watching the "exquisitely crafted" lamps and lanterns slowly rise and return to their positions after more than a year, Zhang Xin felt very pleased.

Zhang Xin believes that in the Yanqing Competition Area, lighting planning should be based on the principle of "protecting ecology, practicality is beauty", taking the solution of functional lighting as the primary task, controlling the excessive visualization of the night scene of the building, using functional lighting to present the grand scene of the mountain forest venue, and "weakly intervening" in the natural ecology.

In order to uphold the "weak intervention" of the venue to the natural environment, the team designed the mountain "arbor" street lamp family in the competition end area and the race end area of Yanqing Division, inspired by the vegetation characteristics of haituo mountain area, and the standardized modules of various functions can be flexibly combined according to the actual needs of the venue.

In addition, in order to take into account the lighting and landscape effects, they also specially made a garden light system in Yanqing Winter Olympic Village. The lower part of the lamp adopts a custom imitation paper glass lampshade to ensure the functional illumination and environmental lighting of the road with soft diffuse light; the upper part of the lamp uses a flood light, which can flexibly adjust the brightness and illumination direction, provide vertical illumination for the public activity area centered on trees, illuminate trees and building corners, and provide visual positioning for athletes.
