Winter Olympic torchbearer Zhang Li: "It is very happy to be a Chinese architectural designer"

At 6 p.m. on February 2, the Olympic flame came to Shougang Park, the venue of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, where the ski jump is located. The torchbearer who participated in the first baton of the torch relay was Zhang Li, dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, who served as the chief planner of the Zhangjiakou division of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the chief designer of the Shougang Ski Jump. "It is a great honor to participate in the Torch Relay as an architectural designer, and it is a great pleasure to be a Chinese architectural designer!" That was his biggest feeling.

Not far from the starting point, the Shougang Ski Jump is quietly waiting for the arrival of the wonderful event. Zhang Li is a native of Beijing, when he was a child, he came to the old factory area of Shougang, and his main memory is four cooling towers, plus the West Mountain in the back and the cooling pool in front, forming a skyline. At that time, he could not imagine that he would be able to participate in the design of the Winter Olympic venues as an architectural designer in the future and retain the Skyline of Shougang.

It is the world's first permanent jumping platform and the first competition venue in the history of the Winter Olympics to be directly integrated with the reuse of industrial heritage. How to perpetuate the memory of industrial heritage? How can I join a new jump without destroying the skyline? Zhang Li's team has made great efforts, using virtual reality and other technologies, starting from the southeast-facing angle, setting a test scene every five degrees, and determining the final orientation of the jump platform based on these test data.

Eventually, the end area of the platform sank five meters below the lake, just so that the entire jumping platform did not look higher than the cooling tower, but a curve down from the height of the cooling tower. Zhang Li was pleased to see that Shougang's old employees would often stand on the side of Qunming Lake and point to the other side, and enthusiastically introduced: "This is our Shougang ski jump, the jump platform of the Winter Olympics." "Players who have competed here say the big jump gives a fantastic futuristic feel.

What impressed Zhang Li the most was that in the early days of the construction of the ski jump, a competition director from Italy who was in charge of the snowboard project could not hold back his excitement, swam in Qunming Lake next to the big jump, and sighed to Zhang Li: "In Beijing Shougang Park, the snowboard project finally has its first home!" ”

In Beijing's Shijingshan, the ski jump rises like a graceful and smooth flying streamer on the shore of the lake; in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, the National Ski Jumping Center is like a huge Ruyi lying on the mountain. Zhang Li not only imprinted the elements of traditional Chinese culture in the Winter Olympic venues, but also paid special attention to "sustainable use" in the design, and he hoped that these venues, as the heritage of the Winter Olympics, would not only serve "supermen" such as athletes, but also serve more "ordinary people".

He introduced that the Shougang Ski Jumping Platform uses the lake surface to create a walking space around the lake, while the National Ski Jumping Center has designed steps from the bottom to the top, making people feel as if they are walking in the mountains, and the summit is designed as a multi-functional space, which can be used to hold conferences, exhibitions and so on after the game.

"Good design comes from life and serves life." Zhang Li believes that the best sports venues should take people's ordinary lives into the design considerations, he hopes that the Winter Olympic venues can be confirmed to be better integrated with life after the games, and the team will continue to work hard to provide China's "answer" for the sustainable development of Olympic architecture.
