From February 4, 2022 (the fourth day of the Chinese New Year), "ON | OFF 2021: Back to the Future will be the first exhibition of the Art Museum to present the ongoing narrative of Chinese contemporary art in the post-globalization era with 43 works created by 27 Chinese contemporary artists.

Space and works of Bichen

Since its opening, the "WawaKan museum" has gathered a lot of popularity through the double spiral staircase in its architectural atrium. Return, repetition and spiral are the most iconic spatial forms of the "He Art Museum" exhibition hall building, and they are also the curatorial concepts emphasized in this exhibition. The organizer hopes to try to let the audience feel the poetry of the space and the work through the repetition of concepts between the works.

Chen Wei "In the Waves"

Artist Chen Wei is good at creating immersive spaces through multimedia technology, and this exhibition showcases his "In the Waves" series and "Fault (Where Are You Going Tonight)". The urban youth in the work, wrapped in a distorted color fog, danced with their eyes closed, and in his own self-description, he said that the original intention of the creation of this group of works was to "capture the moments of 'out of the blue' in the lives of young people."

Wang Yuyang,"Artificial Moon 2"

The independent "moon-making" is considered to be a feature of Wang Yuyang's creation. Wang Yuyang's work "Artificial Moon 2" at first glance appears to be a colorful screen glowing sphere, and the polarized light film wrapped around the sphere moves randomly under the control of the program, resulting in color changes. Wang Yuyang graduated from the Stage Art Department of the Central Academy of Drama and the Experimental Art Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and has created series such as "Reinventing the Moon", "Artificial Moon", "Breathing" and "Line-Drawr" in the past ten years, all of which are trying to explore and analyze the way for human senses to perceive reality and virtual reality.

A new practice for artists

The works brought by this exhibition are also composed of new media and multiple media, which makes people dizzying. However, the theme of the exhibition tries to present a certain trend and face of Chinese contemporary art in the past decade, which is quite serious. The exhibition is divided into three units: "Time Posture", "Memory Space" and "Multiple Echoes", and the works on display cover a variety of artistic media such as painting, sculpture, photography, installation and video, involving different topics such as media society, natural environment, identity, and geographical boundaries.

Li Liao, "Weakness"

It's a late-arriving exhibition. Nine years ago, the "ON | OFF" is exhibited at the UCCA Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, focusing on reflecting the concepts and practices of young Chinese artists in the post-Olympic era. Today, Sun Dongdong, one of the curators of the year, has re-examined the continuation and development of this theme in recent years.

Now it is marked with a new time and subtitle, which aims to relive and continue the unfinished theme narrative of the 2013 exhibition from the tension of "integration and decoupling" in the current and increasingly fierce post-globalization era. The second half of the exhibition title, "Back to the Future", is inspired by the Hollywood science fiction comedy film "Back to the Future" and the Disneyland Revolving Stage Performance Project, as a commentary on the title of the first half of the exhibition, containing a vision based on the present, returning to the past and the future.

He Xiangyu "Darryl"

The artist He Xiangyu participated in the "ON | twice OFF" exhibition. In recent years, He Xiangyu has been thinking more and more about what kind of culture he represents and what kind of identity he represents. He combines his life experience with his artistic creation, triggering a change in practice. The sculpture in this exhibition is a statue of a friend of his, the direct source of the image is a traditional greeting ceremonial gesture of the Eastern Persians, while the rotten lemon next to it refers to the historically abandoned overseas Chinese workers.

Inspiration for the future

In China, the only first-tier cities for contemporary art are Beijing and Shanghai. Sun Dongdong said in an interview that he did not think of holding the exhibition in Shunde at the beginning. Eventually, the group exhibition, which had attracted attention in Beijing, landed in the Greater Bay Area, which gave Sun Dongdong a new perspective on where contemporary art takes place. He believes that we can no longer look at the boundaries of contemporary art or urban culture with a very solidified and stereotyped vision, and it is not only cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen that have good culture and art.

Zhang Ruyi, "Soaking in the Landscape"

In recent years, Shunde's "He Art Museum" has once become a popular punch card place for its architectural space, and its rich collection of modern and modern art, especially the classic collection of the Lingnan School, is also well known. For the vice president unit of this provincial art museum association, becoming an Internet celebrity punch card may be just the beginning. How to integrate traditional history and culture with contemporary art is an important direction for this art museum and the cultural construction of the entire Greater Bay Area.

In Sun Dongdong's view, such academic and topical exhibitions are held in Shunde, which has some kind of inspiration for the future. "When a region's total economic volume reaches a certain scale, the city will inevitably release the cultural requirements from within, but this is what each of our practitioners should think about." Are we just looking at the so-called first-tier cities and who we are really doing these exhibitions for? ”
