Intel's 2021 revenue of $79 billion claims to dominate the vRAN and 5G platforms

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger's claim that nearly all virtual radio access networks (vRAN) use its Xeon processor and FlexRAN architecture, highlighting the chipmaker's growing involvement in the mobile infrastructure market.

On the earnings call for the fourth quarter of 2021, Kissinger also claimed Intel's leadership on the 5G platform, noting that it will benefit from growth in the edge segment over the next two to three years.

Chipmakers have an opportunity in the vRAN market because it relies on general-purpose hardware rather than specialized chips.

Intel's data center business, which includes sales to cloud providers and enterprises, saw revenue increase 20 percent year-over-year to $7.3 billion.

Kissinger attributes growth to enterprise demand: "We don't think everything is going to go to the cloud. ”

The CEO predicts that Intel-owned Mobileye will launch a commercial robo-taxi service in Munich and Tel Aviv this year. He added that the sector's IPO plans are in order and there could be another business spin-off in the future.

Intel reported fourth-quarter revenue of $20.5 billion, up 2.7 percent. Higher costs and expenses dragged down net profit, which fell 21.1 percent to $4.6 billion.
