Wang Xizhi's "Cold Cut Thesis Scroll" on paper

Dimensions (inside): length 25.6 cm width 21.5 cm

Collection of Tianjin Museum

This post is a reply from Wang Xizhi and should have been written in his later years. Wang Xizhi (303-361), courtesy name Yishao, was a famous calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, who was revered by posterity as "Shusheng" and "Second King" along with his son Wang Xianzhi. His calligraphy has been revered by successive generations of calligraphers, but the authentic manuscripts have long been destroyed, and now only the hook facsimile and the Fa Ti imitation engraving are found. The hook facsimile is directly from the original sketch and filled with ink, the closest to the original post, especially precious, so this Tang Dynasty hook facsimile is also regarded as Wang's true pen. Dong Qichang believes that this post is one of the three authentic works of Wang Xizhi. Dong's own calligraphy is also based on the "Two Kings", which is quite imitated, and can be described as the collection of the "Two Kings" book style.

Full volume appreciation

Wang Xizhi: It's very cold, are you all okay?

Tianjin Museum treasures Wang Xizhi's "Han Cut Thesis", ink paper, measuring 25.6 × 21.5 cm. The paper is printed with a silk bar, the fibers are slender and thick and soft, from the color of the paper, the color is ochre yellow, and the yellow tiller juice should be dyed before writing (its color is closely the same as that of the Tang scripture paper). 5 lines longitudinal, 50 words counted. The thesis was identified by Zhang Heng, an expert in ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting, and is a tang dynasty hook facsimile. "Han Qie The" is also known as "Twenty-Seven Thesis" and "Xie Sima Ti". Engraved into the "Chunhua Ge Ti" volume VII, "Daguan Ti" volume VII, etc.

Wang Xizhi: It's very cold, are you all okay?

"Han Qie Ti" is also known as "Twenty-Seven Thesis" and "Xie Sima Ti". The Tang Dynasty ticks the book and has a silk bar. Length 25.6 cm, width 21.5 cm, cursive five lines, five crosses. At the end of the volume, there are inscriptions of Dong Qichang and Lou Jian. This post was once entered into the Shaoxing Inner Province in the Song Dynasty, and the Ming Dynasty flowed into the folk, and the Ming Han Shineng, Wang Xijue, and the Qing King Shimin were handed over to the collection, which is a calligraphy art treasure that has been passed down for a long time. Among them, "Xie Sima " should be Xie An. Xie An is Wang Xizhi's closest friend. Xie An was 41 years old when he was 41 years old when he was out of the mountains in the fourth year of Shengping (360 AD). This letter should be written in this year, the following year, that is, in the fifth year of Shengping, the death of Wang Xizhi. Therefore, this book should have been written by Wang Xizhi in his later years. The body of this post is beautiful and moist, calm and flowing, and it seems to be effortless when writing, reflecting the high maturity of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy in his later years, and the water is natural, and the ultimate is wonderful. As the Tang Dynasty Sun Guoting said: "It is a book of the Right Army, and the last year is more wonderful, when the fate is thoughtful and comprehensive, the morale is peaceful, not agitated, and the wind rules are far away." Therefore, it can "not be excited, but the wind rules are far away."

Wang Xizhi: It's very cold, are you all okay?

The Han Che Ti interprets: "The Twenty-Seventh Reward of November: The Twelve Books of the Fourteenth and Eighteenth Days, Knowing and Asking For Comfort." Cold cut, better than each other? Long-term suspense. My food is at least inferior! Li Yin Xie Sima Shu, not one by one, Xi Zhi Retribution! (There is a word for "monastic power" in the lower right of the post)

Translated into the vernacular, it means: Wang Xizhi's report on November 27: The two letters from the fourteenth and eighteenth have been received, and it is very gratifying to know that you are greeting me. The weather has been relatively cold recently, are all your friends okay? Thinking of your worries and fatigues, I can't rest assured for a long time. I've been eating very little lately and I'm in poor health. Due to my lack of physical strength, I will not elaborate on Sima Xie's letters. Wang Xizhi reported again as above.

In just a few crosses, it reveals the deep feelings between close friends! Xie An was Wang Xizhi's thickest confidant, and it was he who wrote xie an in this letter. Why is the historical value and calligraphy value of this "Han Qie Ti" very high, because Wang Xizhi was a generation of "book saints"; and Xie An was definitely an important figure among the literati doctors at that time. First, Xie An had participated in the Elegant Collection of the Lanting Grand Gathering, and the second was when Xie An was sima of Huanwen Xi in the fourth year of Shengping (360); the following year, Wang Xizhi died, which can also be said to be the last treasure written by the Right Army to Xie An! This correspondence should be the treasure ink of the right army in its later years. We often say: "Jin people still rhyme", this "rhyme" is the Jin people's high ancient and elegant rhyme. The "Han Che Ti", "Chu Yue Ti", and "Funeral Post" can be called the "troika" in the Right Army's heirloom Baohan.

Dong Qichang

The calligraphy pen is the biggest highlight of this right army letter, which is used simultaneously with flanking and centering, the gesture is flipped in a degree, the lines are strong and round, the ink is ancient and elegant, and the rhythm of the words is relaxed; the perfect glyph shape of fresh and elegant is more calm and loose, less frivolous and impetuous. The ups and downs of cursive abstract lines often seek an inadvertent balance in self-contradiction. The simple pen and ink in the "Han Cut Thesis", although it is not the true handwriting of the Right Army, but the Mysterious Pen and Ink outlined in the characters seems to emerge as if the real thing appeared, and the hooker's understanding of the glyph of this post can be said to be familiar with the chest. The annual rings of light ink vicissitudes between the words make the ink color of the past more elegant!

Wang Xizhi: It's very cold, are you all okay?

This letter was once treasured by The Inner House of Shaoxing in the Song Dynasty. Scattered in the Ming Dynasty, it was collected by several generations of celebrities such as Han Shineng, Wang Xijue, and Wang Shimin. The volume has Dong Qichang and Lou Jianbao inscriptions. Dong Qichangbao (see above picture): "The true deeds of the Right Army are rare in the world, but the "Moon Half Post" of The Duke of Lu Wenyu in Wuxiang and the "This Matter Post" of the Wumen Wang Wenke Family are related to this. The so-called mantle of San'in, unless he has eyes, cannot be passed on to the world. "Dong Shan appreciates, rich collection." Many of them have personal appreciation and high opinions, and all the treasures and famous paintings in their lifetimes have inscriptions. The "Cold Cut" is quite insightful, and this letter is highly praised. We often say that there is a treasure in the pile of paper. This Right Army's "Han Cut Thesis" is the "Book Saint" ink treasure that cultural relics appraiser Liu Guangqi pulled out of a pile of waste paper and found. This act of discernment is a great achievement.
