Anhui laser display equipment illuminates the Winter Olympics "Snow Ruyi"

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to open on February 4 and close on February 20, while the Winter Paralympic Games are scheduled to open on March 4 and close on March 13. Preparations are in place. In Xue Ruyi, China's first internationally standard ski jumping site, the laser projection equipment developed by the Anhui research team is undergoing final commissioning, which will use snow to play "snow videos" to the audience during the Winter Olympics.

Illuminate the "Snow Ruyi"

On the evening of January 23, engineer Ke Yongzhou arrived as usual at the China National Ski Jumping Center, known as "Snow Ruyi." The lowest temperature on this day is minus 10 degrees Celsius. After dark, commissioning will begin in the "box room".

Since September last year, with the special support of the Ministry of Science and Technology "Science and Technology Winter Olympics", a high-tech company in Hefei has been selected for the panchromatic laser projector jointly developed by The University of Science and Technology of China, and they will work together to use the snow floor of the "Xueruyi" stadium as a display screen to achieve a complex display area of more than 1,000 square meters on the snow, and play various wonderful videos at the Winter Olympics.

Many people may still remember the opening scroll of the "Bird's Nest" at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which is actually an LED screen, which is 147 meters long, 22 meters wide, and paved with 44,000 LEDs.

But in "Snow Ruyi", snow replaced led screens. "What we have to do at the Winter Olympics is to use two ultra-high brightness HD laser projectors to project the picture to the snow surface in the middle of the football field at the end of the jump platform, and the projection display area reaches 1100 square meters." Xu Lixin, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China and chairman of Hefei Panchromatic Light Display Technology Co., Ltd., told the Anhui Business Daily Rong media reporter.

The entire projection area is roughly equivalent to the five largest size movie screens. This will also be the largest single projection area of the entire Winter Olympics.

Will the snow melt?

To this end, Ke Yongzhou and his partners have been busy for months. Ke Yongzhou entered the "Snow Ruyi" on December 26, when the equipment had not yet arrived, he first hoisted the "box machine room" where the laser projection equipment was placed on the roof of the building on the left at the end of the ski center slide, and the entire vertical height was about 30 meters.

Ke Yongzhou told reporters: Because the projection area is too large, the projection screen is displayed using 2 projectors superimposed, "The equipment is projected downward in the box machine room, the projection distance is about 45 meters, and then the fusion device is used to correct the picture."

The biggest problem in this process is that snow is a complex surface, not the same as a wall. "The roughness of the walls is not so high, the light scattering is not so obvious, the snow is fluffy, and the light will penetrate into it." Ke Yongzhou said.

Throwing such a big picture requires a high brightness, not to put the light source (to the snow) a bunch of it, you must work the light source, do a good job of topology arrangements, continuously improve the process, but also suppress speckle. Xu Lixin said.

Before the equipment entered the field, the technical team had another layer of concern: projecting onto the snow surface for a long time, "Will the snow melt?" For this matter, the team specially tested - the laser projection equipment was turned on to the maximum power, and the effect was seen after a long time of projection, and finally everyone was relieved.

A world of "real colors"

Ke Yongzhou told reporters: Laser projection equipment has entered the "Snow Ruyi" since December 31, and the daily boot test is more than 3 hours, "Generally starting from six o'clock and ending at nine o'clock, it has been running trouble-free at present." ”

"It can be said that our equipment performs well in key technical indicators such as ultra-high brightness, speckle suppression technology, and uniform illumination, with clear picture quality, true colors, and no interference from snow." Xu Lixin said.

"Color" is also Xu Lixin's key word. The laser projection equipment at the Winter Olympics uses full-color display technology. "This is a display technology that uses pure lasers as a display light source, which can show that our eyes see more than 90% of the colors in nature, and restore a colorful real world to the audience."

This is also the "killer skill" of panchromatic light. In this industry-university-research integration company jointly established by the laser display research team of the University of Science and Technology of China and the High-tech Industry Investment Group of Hefei High-tech Zone, the chief scientists are two academicians (Xu Zuyan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Ouyang Zhongcan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences).

In contrast, the colors that can be seen on ultra-high-definition TVs are only about 30% to 40% of the real colors in nature; daily projectors can be about 30%; and early light sources (halogen lamps, mercury lamps) are only about 20%.

Xu Lixin called this "what is seen is what is seen." "We plan to use equipment to show Anhui's innovative achievements during the Winter Olympics to promote Anhui to the world." That can be said to be a "real color" Anhui.

It's all about the Winter Olympics

The "Snow Ruyi" full of Chinese elements will undoubtedly become the most recognizable "symbol" in Zhangjiakou. "Xue Ruyi" is China's first ski jumping venue that meets international standards, and will host 8 gold medals in 2 sub-events of ski jumping and Nordic biathlon during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

It is also the world's first ski jumping venue with a large cantilevered building in the top departure area, with the longest ski jumping track in the world.

Throughout the Winter Olympics, Ke Yongzhou and the technical team will stick to the "Snow Ruyi" until the end of the Winter Paralympic Games in mid-March. "There are 10,000 people in the football stadium under the jump, and they can all watch our 'snow video'."

This will also be the longest business trip in Ke Yongzhou's ten years as an engineer. He has two children, an eight-year-old and one just over eight months old, who will all watch the Beijing Winter Olympics on TV, and this year they will spend a Spring Festival without a father. "It's New Year's day and I miss my kids." Ke Yongzhou said: "But the children also know that I am working for the Winter Olympics. ”
