It is reported that the second tunnel of Jiaozhou Bay is an important part of the city's high-speed road network. According to the plan, the main line of the project starts from the east of the intersection of Qianshan South Road on Huaihe East Road in the west, crosses Jiaozhou Bay in the east, lands near Qingdao Port, and connects Hang'an Elevated Highway and Huanwan Road. The total length of the main line of the project is about 17 kilometers, the main line is set up with 6 lanes in both directions, the design speed is 80 kilometers per hour, a pair of two-lane access ramps are set up to the south at the intersection of Penghu Island Street, and a single-lane exit ramp is reserved for the implementation conditions on Qinhuangdao Road. Set up main line toll stations on Huaihe East Road, set up ramp toll stations on Penghu Island Street, and reserve conditions for the implementation of long-term toll stations on Qinhuangdao Road. The western end of the project combines the planned road network and terrain conditions to reserve the implementation conditions of the north-south traffic road.

In October 2020, the second tunnel project of Jiaozhou Bay was officially started. Previously, the excavation of the inclined shaft at the end of Huangdao has progressed smoothly and entered the construction stage of the sea area, and the construction of the main line at the end of Huangdao has officially begun. It is reported that the geological conditions and construction environment of the main line of the Second Tunnel in Jiaozhou Bay are complex, and through multiple fault zones such as the Cangkou fault, it will face world-class difficulties such as ventilation and disaster prevention of ultra-long tunnels, large-scale tunnels crossing large-scale faults, and docking between large-scale diameter shields and drilling and blasting tunnels in the sea.
