Jintang Submarine Tunnel is a control project of the whole line of Yongzhou Railway, located under the Jintang Waterway between Ningbo and Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province, from Beilun District of Ningbo City in the west to Jintang Town of Zhoushan City in the east, with a total length of 16.18 kilometers, of which the shield section is 11.21 kilometers long.

The Jintang undersea tunnel project is constructed by two shield machines, "Yongzhou" and "Dinghai", each of which is 135 meters long, weighs 4,350 tons, and has an excavation diameter of 14.57 meters. Among them, the "Yongzhou" excavated 4,940 meters from west to east, and the "Dinghai" excavated 6,270 meters from east to west. After a "long journey" through high water pressure and complex formations, the two shield machines will finally "meet" on the seabed, with a docking error of no more than 2 centimeters on the central axis.

The geology of the sea between Ningbo and Zhoushan is complex and changeable. The tunnel has to pass under a number of risk sources such as oil pipelines, seawalls, wharves and waterways, with a maximum depth of 78 meters and a maximum water pressure of 8.4 bar, which is equivalent to nearly 1 ton of weight on the palm area of an adult's hand. During the crossing process, it has to go through 28 soft and hard stratum transformations, of which the highest strength of hard rock is nearly 200 megapascals, and the complexity, difficulty and risk of construction are rare in the world.

The connection between Zhoushan and Ningbo is currently connected by highway bridges and ferries, and the capacity between the two places fluctuates greatly. The shield is used to pass through the Jintang golden waterway, which can realize the all-weather operation of the railway and effectively reduce the impact of the project construction on the waterway of Ningbo Zhoushan Port.

The Yongzhou Railway starts from Ningbo East Railway Station in the west, passes through Yinzhou District and Beilun District of Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, passes through the new undersea tunnel to Jintang Island in Zhoushan City, and through the new sea-crossing bridge to Zhangzi Island and Zhoushan Island, and finally reaches Baiquan Town in Dinghai District. With a total length of 76.4 kilometers and a design speed of 250 kilometers per hour, the line is a "one-hour traffic circle" in Zhejiang Province and a convenient passenger passage between the mainland and Zhoushan Island.

After the completion and operation of the Ningbo-Zhouzhou Railway, it will end the history of the Zhoushan Islands without a railway, which is of great significance to realize the development of Ningbo-Zhoushan city, accelerate the integration of the two places into the "Belt and Road" and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and promote the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

Looking forward to "Yongzhou" and "Dinghai"

See you at the bottom of the sea!
