Recently, the construction site Jun visited the Lyceum Theater, which has been renovated from the inside out. The renovation was carried out by Shanghai Construction Engineering Group, and with ingenious craftsmanship and innovative technology, the project team transformed this memorable theater once again. It is also a cultural building with a history of more than 90 years, which is another masterpiece of Sijian Group in the renovation of historical buildings and urban renewal after the Shanghai Concert Hall.

First of all, the construction site Jun walked into the most core area of the theater repair - the audience hall, and saw that the dome of the theater had become more towering and three-dimensional, and brushed with the new color of "Lyceum Red" combined with bright gold, the overall display of brilliant and dazzling effects, the perfect integration of European retro and Shanghai culture.
"Since its completion, the Lyceum Theater has undergone many repairs and reconstructions, and this time we have done a very 'heart'. Flipping through the design drawings first drawn in 1930, we strive to find the 'original taste' of the time," said the project leader of Shanghai Construction Engineering Group.

"We repaired and enhanced the original decorative base of the dome against the construction drawings and video photographs of the time, and restored the finishes. First of all, the decorative lines of the custom dome are molded, and secondly, the pull bolts are used to anchor the base surface of the dome, which not only restores its original appearance, but also does not increase the load of the dome. ”

The Lyceum Theater Audience Hall Dome has been built for more than 90 years, and the entire structure is suspended on the steel structure roof truss to fix the decorative panels through the suspension ribs, and the properties of various materials have declined. And because the dome is a key protected part of the historical building, while eliminating the existing hidden dangers, Sijian Group also knows the real-time status of the dome through modern monitoring technology to assist the normal operation and use of the Lyceum Theatre.
During the repair process, monitoring and sensing equipment was installed in the key parts of the dome in the audience hall to monitor the deformation of the characteristic parts of the dome and obtain the force performance of the main components of the dome, including the tilt, deflection, vibration, and strain of some members, and the settlement deformation of the characteristic points of the decorative layer of the dome.
All monitoring data is transmitted remotely to the cloud database, and a digital model of the dome is established, the monitoring chart data and the digital model are linked, the monitoring data is visualized through the platform, the deformation of the dome is monitored and warned, the safety management of the Lyceum Theater is assisted, and the healthy and safe use of the Lyceum Theater is assisted.
In addition, the wall of the audience hall and the stage frame and other areas are also reproduced, according to the original indoor style of construction, customized new GRG veneers, optimize the wall decoration structure layer, install perforated sound absorbing boards, to maximize the restoration of the original construction style, improve the acoustic effect of the audience hall.

Combined with the latest functional requirements of the theater, the original layout was appropriately adjusted, the fire fighting equipment and facilities were updated, and the fire sprinklers, water cannons and other fire points were added to further enhance the fire safety of the entire Lyceum Theater.
In terms of stage facilities, a comprehensive transformation has been carried out around sound, light, electricity, video, etc., stage machinery has been upgraded, and acoustic equipment and facilities have been further improved to meet the needs of modern theater performances.

At the same time, the steel structure is added to the stage, which greatly improves the structural strength. All 31 stage booms were replaced, and the load was increased from the original 220 kg to 500 kg, and the use function was further strengthened.
Meticulously restored to every detail to awaken wonderful "retro memories"
In the past renovations, the floor of the entrance hall was once transformed into beige marble. The renovation restored the ground finish to a terrazzo floor in accordance with the construction pattern at that time, echoing the main terrazzo staircase on both sides. In order to restore the original terrazzo finish, the terrazzo style of copper strips and tricolor patterns surrounding each other is determined through material component analysis, small sample trial matching, and the deepening of the finish pattern, and the traditional construction process is used to reproduce the historical traces by mixing, paving and repeatedly polishing.

With reference to the historical drawings, after the original shape and frame of the wall of the building on both sides were removed, the plaster molding lines were newly made, decorated with warm gray latex mat paint, and the partial gold leaf finish was adopted. It's cleaner and more gorgeous than before.

The façade of the Lyceum Theatre is in the neoclassical style as a whole and richly decorated. After experiencing sun and night dew and rain erosion, the façade has been damaged to varying degrees. Among them, some of the Taishan bricks on the façade have mildew, damage, empty drums, peeling, cracking and peeling of cornice lines, and rust pollution of granite rock materials.

The project department strictly follows the principle of minimal intervention to restore the historical features of the façade. According to the original style, customize the Taishan brick pieces, replace some empty drums, damage the Taishan tiles, and select the cleaning agent for non-destructive cleaning according to the severity of the pollution of the tiles.

In view of the problems such as damaged waistline of granite stone cornice and mildew of stone finish, the waist line size and floral ornament are obtained through three-dimensional scanning, and the waist line of the same material is customized according to the original style to replace the seriously damaged granite cornice waist line, and the original color of the granite finish is restored by mud cleaning.

In addition, the renovation of the façade doors and windows is also a major feature. The façade steel doors and windows are the key protective parts of the façade, some doors and windows appear deformed, rusty and other deterioration phenomena, more glass damage or missing, and the sound insulation effect of doors and windows is difficult to meet the acoustic needs of the theater. In order to protect the original appearance of the historical building to the greatest extent, the project department repairs and repairs the existing steel window frame by heating the shaping correction, cutting and welding to replace the seriously rusted materials, replaces the original single-layer glass with insulating glass, and improves the overall sound insulation performance of the window sash;

After the renovation, the Lyceum Theater not only restores the retro style of the last century, but also improves the performance environment and performance comfort. The theater was successfully auditioned on January 1, 2022, and officially opened for operation on January 14, 2022.
