Ruoerge Wetland National Nature Reserve, with an average altitude of 3500 meters, was listed as an "internationally important wetland" in 2008, is an important water conservation area in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and is also a national alpine wetland biodiversity reserve, the world's largest alpine peat swamp wetland, known as "China's most beautiful wetland" and "black-necked crane town".

In recent years, the Ruoerge Wetland has been restored and further improved, becoming the main habitat of many wild birds. It is home to many wild animals endemic to alpine wetlands, such as red hemp ducks, grey geese, white bone-toped cranes, swans, black-necked cranes, red-crowned cranes, Tibetan mandarin ducks, terns, vultures, eagles, marmots, foxes, prairie pikas and many other wild animals endemic to alpine wetlands.
