The integrated team, led by Foster + Partners, in partnership with Marge Arkitekter, won the Stockholm Central Station development competition in Stockholm. The award-winning design, presented by a team of LAND Arkitektur, Thornton Tomasetti, Ramboll, Wenanders and TAM Group, will integrate multiple modes of transport in an integrated transportation hub while prioritizing the flow of people and creating a new mixed-use urban area.

Luke Fox, Head of Studios at Foster + Partners, said: "We are delighted to win the design competition to reimagine the future of Stockholm Central Station. As the world's collective focus shifts to more sustainable ways of living, working and traveling, we must strengthen and redevelop our transportation nodes, repairing and connecting the urban fabrics that surround them. We look forward to working with Jernhusen, Trafikverket and the City of Stockholm in the coming months to develop these proposals." ”

Stockholm Central Station is located in the heart of the city and is Sweden's largest transport hub. Originally opened in 1871, this historic station now welcomes more passengers than originally designed.

Future plans to increase the number of trains coming into the city will facilitate the reshaping of central Stockholm. Built largely on top of existing tracks, the new district will reconnect the surrounding streets, creating an active, friendly and safe public area that stitches together the east and west sides of the city and improves passenger connectivity in Stockholm without compromising the historic skyline.

The master plan will create a new public plaza, making the new station area a natural part of the urban fabric. Inspired by the scale and color of the Clara block, the design builds on the city's existing streetscape, creating a vibrant area for a range of mixed-use features. It also provides an active public domain and better connectivity as well as clear pathfinding. The design recreates the historic station railway park at the southern end. With stunning views of Gamla stan's Old Town, South Side and Town Hall, it will be a new green meeting place in the city centre.

By shrinking the Klarabergsgatan viaduct and reducing traffic flow, these proposals create a natural extension of the historic central waiting hall. The entrance hall will combine the old and new parts of the station to connect the central station platform, the City Terminal bus and the Arlanda Express train.

The proposals also seek to relocate the new central tunnel to Klarabergsgatan to create an underground east-west connection throughout the site. The design takes into account the possibility of extending the tunnel in order to provide underground connections to Citybanan in the future.

The tunnel will then connect the central station, Arlanda Express and the extended platform of the city terminal bus station, combining the four modes of transport to form a single multimodal station. A new centralized logistics center could also be located on the west side of the track, where goods and shelters could be serviced directly without disturbing the common areas above.

Angus Campbell, senior partner at Foster + Partners, added: "This is a historic undertaking. We are very honored to be responsible for further developing our proposal. Stockholm is a unique city with a historic silhouette of the city. We believe our proposals can create meaningful connections between the city and the central station area, while creating green urban spaces for people and a central focus for sustainable travel in the heart of Stockholm. ”

The project, which involves covering the rail area and doubling the passenger capacity at Sweden's most central location, is scheduled for planning consultation in 2023.
