Artist Profile

To paint his murals, Sean Joro succumbed to the changing tides of the ocean. The Los Angeles-based artist paddles into underground passages and concrete obstacles, accessible only through water, and he balances on the surfboard with minimal supplies — all paint, brushes and other materials must fit on a 10-foot surfboard. There he depicts images of women half submerged in the sea and strange hands that seem to burst from the surface of the sea. "Not only did I have to learn faster and more efficient ways to paint on a surfboard, but I also needed to mix layers together to accommodate tidal and other changes that might limit certain areas of the wall," he shared

The visibility of Sean Jorow's large works changes with the water level, allowing the celestial motifs that mark the faces of his subjects or the paint spots on their backs to peek into. "I like to add more surrealist elements to the figures I paint – always trying to balance the water and concrete aesthetics," he says.

In addition to his seaside murals, Sean Jorow painted some smaller works on canvas and occasionally sold limited-edition paintings in his shop.

The ANA series uses temporary non-toxic paint to create characters on melting icebergs. This is inspired by the current rate of devastating melting of Arctic ice.

The CHANGE mural is in support of the Black Life-For-Life movement and the peaceful protests that are taking place across the United States.
