Beijing, January 19 (China News Network) (Reporter Xia Bin) The kick-off meeting of the world's largest supercomputing competition 2022 ASC World College Students Supercomputer Competition (ASC22) was held simultaneously in Beijing, Hefei and online on the 19th. A number of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, experts in the field of supercomputing and artificial intelligence, and representatives of teachers and students of the participating teams attended the meeting.

It is reported that ASC22 has attracted more than 300 participating teams from all over the world to register, and the teams selected through the preliminary round will participate in the finals held at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei from May 7 to 11.

The Chinese mainland teams shortlisted for the ASC22 Finals will participate in the live finals, and the teams outside the Chinese mainland will participate in the finals online, where they will compete in application questions such as benchmarking, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, and participate in the English defense, competing for the first runner-up, the e Prize Computing Challenge Award, the Highest Computing Performance Award and other awards.

ASC22 focuses on the integration of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI), and all participating college teams need to complete two challenging cutting-edge application questions in the preliminary competition, namely the "source" AI language model and the REPRESENTATIVE SOFTWARE OF AI+Science, DeePMD-kit, which will be a huge test for the supercomputing application and innovation ability of the participating teams.

The ASC22 Live Finals were held at the University of Science and Technology of China. As a world-class university at home and abroad, the University of Science and Technology of China has made a number of world-class scientific research achievements in cutting-edge science and high-tech fields such as quantum information, single molecule science, high-temperature superconductivity, nanoscience, earth environment, life and health. The supercomputing team of the University of Science and Technology of China is also a veteran team on the stage of the World Supercomputing Competition, and has won heavyweight awards such as the champion and runner-up for many times.

Wang Endong, the initiator of the ASC competition and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that this year coincides with the 10th anniversary of the ASC competition, "ten years of trees, a hundred years of tree people", and promoting the cultivation of supercomputing young talents is the original intention of the ASC competition. A considerable number of students have increased their understanding of supercomputing through competitions, broadened their horizons, and devoted themselves to the front line of supercomputing and application after graduation and have made achievements, becoming the "supercomputing power" of the new generation.

Wang Endong said that the ASC competition mode of "promoting learning by competition and meeting friends with competition" has achieved remarkable results in talent training, especially in the exchange of international young talents, which plays an obvious role and provides an international stage for participating university students to exchange and cooperate. After a decade of development, ASC competitions have developed a unique competition culture, attracting more and more people to participate in it.

Zhou Congzhao, vice president of the University of Science and Technology of China, pointed out that high-performance computing and artificial intelligence are basic and strategic issues related to the development of science and technology and industry. The research and application of high-performance computing in the University of Science and Technology of China covers almost all disciplines of science and engineering, not only making breakthroughs in cutting-edge technology paths such as quantum computing, but also achieving important progress in application fields such as catastrophic weather forecasting and urban social emergency response systems, and forming a perfect high-performance computing talent training system. This year coincides with the 10th anniversary of ASC, and the holding of the ASC22 Finals will further promote the talent training and cutting-edge technology breakthroughs of the University of Science and Technology of China in the field of high-performance computing.

Jack Dongarra, chairman of the ASC Competition Expert Committee, founder of the Global Supercomputer Rankings TOP500, Fellow of the American Academy of Engineering, Distinguished Professor of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, said the ASC Competition aims to nurture the next generation of young talents and inspire them to explore, innovate and collaborate in the field of supercomputers and artificial intelligence.
