He once sang the hometown song "Yao Family Loves To Be Double" on the CCTV stage to introduce the huxiang style.

He has been deeply involved in music teaching for 25 years, leading students to understand traditional culture in music and singing with cultural confidence.

He is Long Kaiyi, a music teacher at the Film and Television Arts College of Hunan Mass Media Vocational and Technical College. Recently, the reporter approached this music teacher to listen to his method of combining traditional music and popular music, and felt his firm belief in traditional culture and Huxiang culture.

Tell a good story and sing a good song, inherit the classic from the doll to grab

"It is said that today's students only like pop music and do not like traditional music, in fact, we should reflect on whether our teaching has created a lot of opportunities for students to contact and understand traditional music." On the morning of January 13, Long Kaiyi shared his views at a regular seminar of the university's music teaching and research group.

From 25 years of teaching, he has been exploring how to combine the teaching of both traditional music and popular music.

In his early years, he worked as a full-time music teacher in a remote rural middle school for 7 years. At that time, it was catching up with the "star chasing" pandemic, even rural children were no exception, students were only willing to sing all kinds of popular songs at that time, but they were extremely resistant to the music in the music textbook, feeling "too earthy".

"How is traditional music 'old soil'? How can we get them to change their minds? In the face of the dilemma, Long Kaiyi looked in his eyes and was anxious in his heart. As the only full-time music teacher in town at the time, he set out to explore teaching reforms, trying to introduce a large number of traditional songs into the classroom and dig deep into the stories behind the songs.

"Tell a story well, sing a song well" is his teaching method. Whenever the class starts, the children can always hear a funny little story before singing, follow the story, and slowly understand the notes and songs in the textbook. This method has gradually become popular with students, and "what stories to listen to in this class" has become the expectation of many children before taking music lessons.

In 1999, at the "Hunan Provincial Cross-century Primary and Secondary School Quality Education Conference Closing Ceremony Literary and Art Evening", the traditional song and dance program choreographed by Long Kaiyi became the only program selected by rural schools in the whole venue.

That year was his second year as a teacher. "Since then, I have become even more confident that traditional music can be popular if you find the right way, and if you want to pass on the classics, you must plant the roots of cultural self-confidence in the hearts of the dolls." He recalled.

Speaking of Hunan, singing of Hunan, and carrying forward traditional music in practice

In September 2013, Long Kaiyi came to Hunan Mass Media Vocational and Technical College to teach. Previously, he spent 6 years teaching at Hunan City College.

During his work at Hunan City College, he took "speaking Hunan and singing Hunan" as the goal, went deep into Yiyang, explored traditional music and studied local literature and art in this land known as "drama nest". This also makes his original singing style with a strong Huxiang color add a little local style. "During that time, I found a lot of cultural treasures scattered in the folk, which enriched my teaching content and brought me a lot of inspiration for innovative teaching methods." He said.

In 2013, after joining hunan mass media vocational and technical college, he transformed from an undergraduate teacher to a higher vocational educator. After repositioning himself, he clarified his goals: to fully adapt his education and teaching to the pace of the development of modern vocational education, to further integrate curriculum ideology into classroom teaching, and to strive to practice the principle of "three all-round education".

Since teaching at the Hunan Mass Media Vocational College, he has traveled around to learn from the scriptures and gradually broadened his horizons. In June 2016, he obtained the "Performance Brokerage Qualification" certificate and actively led students to participate in various social practical training practice activities; in June 2018, he participated in the national "Vocational College Effective Classroom Construction and Certification Training Class" and obtained the "Double Teacher" quality certificate; the students he guided won the first prize of the provincial competition and the second prize of the national vocal performance competition at the "Vocational College Higher Vocational Group Art Performance Vocational Skills Competition" in 2019.

"Cultural self-confidence and national rejuvenation depend on generations of relay workers to create. Today, we have taken over the baton of history; in the future, I will continue to deepen the frontline of teaching and further promote Huxiang culture and Traditional Chinese culture. He said.
