1) Unfortunately captured
Su Wu was a great statesman, diplomat and patriotic hero of the Han Wudi period, and people praised him. In the first year of the Tianhan Dynasty, he was ordered to send an envoy to the Xiongnu, but unfortunately he was detained. At that time, he took the deputy general Zhang Sheng and more than a hundred soldiers to return the Xiongnu envoys who had been detained in the Han Dynasty. The Xiongnu were very happy to see this, but his attitude towards Su Wu and others was very sloppy, and Su Wu judged with his own experience that the Xiongnu should have no intention of befriending the Han Dynasty, and it was inevitable to start a war in the future.
Unexpectedly, before he could return to China, he was imprisoned. At that time, there was civil unrest in the Xiongnu, and one of the rebellious figures, Yu Chang, confessed that he was supported by Zhang Sheng, and Su Wu and his party were detained since then.
2) It is better to die than to yield
Shan Yu was extremely angry with Su Wu and his party, so he immediately wanted to order them all to be killed. At this time, a nobleman said that it would be too unfriendly to kill them, and it would be better to persuade them to surrender. Just thinking about it, that's right. So he told Su Wu and his party that if they were willing to serve the Xiongnu, they would naturally let them eat and drink spicy, and there were better official positions than now.
However, Su Wu was very reluctant to do so, saying that if he surrendered to the Xiongnu, he would still have the face to return to the Han Dynasty. Saying that it was too late and too soon, he immediately drew his sword and killed himself.
It all happened so fast that Shan Yu almost didn't react. So he immediately passed on the doctor and rescued Su Wu. Later, he was really rescued, but Su Wu still had no intention of surrendering. Shan Yu was very appreciative of him, preferred him to surrender, and began a tug-of-war.
3) Exiled to the North Sea
When Su Wu was rescued, Zhang Sheng was imprisoned, and Wei Lu, who had already surrendered, advised Su Wu to surrender as well, which was much better than returning to the Han Dynasty. Su Wu still did not listen, and later he was imprisoned in the cellar without food or drink, but Su Wu still did not give in. In the end, Shan Yu gave him a herd of rams, exiled him to beihai, and told him when he could return to the Han Dynasty when he gave birth to a lamb.
Su Wu lived in the North Sea for 19 years, where it was cold and he had to wear sheepskin to keep out the cold. If you don't have anything to eat, find wild fruits hidden by animals to eat, and if you don't have to drink, you can find water sources. Life was extremely hard, but as long as he had the motherland in his heart, he could continue to insist. Later, Shan Yu gave him a woman, and he lived a little more fully. Because all along, he was alone.
It was not until March 87 BC that Emperor Wu of Han died and Emperor Zhao of Han ascended the throne. Emperor Han Zhao decided to settle the conflict with the Xiongnu by means of peace, that is, at this time, he hoped that Shan Yu would be able to release the envoys who had been detained that year. It took a lot of effort for the Han Dynasty envoys in charge of this time to finally meet Su Wu and take him back to the Han Dynasty. After returning to China, Su Wu was also rewarded and redeemed his son from the Xiongnu. In 60 BC, Su Wu died of illness at the age of 80.
