Zou Shiyong is a native of Longkou, Shandong, born in 1928, joined the army at the age of 16, followed Huaye to participate in the Battle of Jinan, the Battle of Huaihai, the Battle of Crossing the River and the liberation of Shanghai, and was promoted to deputy instructor of the 3rd Company of the 235th Regiment of the 79th Division of the 27th Army. After the liberation of Shanghai, the 27th Army first served as a garrison in Shanghai, and two months later was transferred to haiyan, Zhejiang Province, for sea crossing training. A year later, the Korean War broke out, and the 27th Army was transferred to Tai'an, Shandong Province, for reorganization, preparing to enter north Korea in January 1951.

Unexpectedly, the situation changed too quickly, and after the first battle, MacArthur commanded Walker's Eighth Army and Almond's 10th Army to advance east-west, preparing to meet the Yalu River. Mr. Peng decided to lure the enemy deeper and use the 6 armies that had entered Korea earlier to deal with Walker's Eighth Army, so that the Eastern Front was very empty. On November 7, the Central Military Commission sent a telegram to General Peng: "The direction of Jiangjie and Changjin should be determined to be fully filled by the Song Corps." "As a result, the 9th Corps could only enter the DPRK three months in advance.
Due to the urgency of the mission, the 9th Corps did not have time to change its clothes and set off. The 20th Army at the head of the group wore a big hat, rubber shoes, and only a pound and a half of cotton on their cotton clothes. The 27th Army set out a day later than the 20th Army, and the situation was slightly better, and it changed cotton clothes in the northeast, but there were no gloves and ear tips, and only a small number of shoes and hats were changed. According to Zou Shiyong's recollection, when the troops crossed the river, each person carried a dry grain bag with five or six kilograms of sorghum rice, and they ate it before they reached the battlefield.
At that time, the enemy held absolute air supremacy and constantly sent aircraft to bomb our army's logistical supply lines, so the combat materials transported to the front line were very limited. At the same time, due to the war, the people around Chosin Lake had long since run out, and their houses were also blown up by enemy planes, which brought great difficulties to the troops in raising food. Zou Shiyong was in charge of logistics in the 3rd Company at that time, and in order to get some food for the soldiers, he thought of many ways. Once, he and a few logisticians found a bag of potatoes in a house destroyed by enemy aircraft, tried to bake the potatoes, and then brought them back.
Before leaving, several people took out all their money and placed it in a conspicuous place in the house as compensation. However, due to the distance from the position and the low temperature, when the cooked potatoes were delivered to the soldiers, they all became ice bumps. There was no way, the warriors could only put these frozen potatoes under their armpits and nibble a little, which showed the degree of hardship at that time. On November 27, 1950, the Battle of Chosin Lake was officially launched, and the 3rd Company of the 235th Regiment of the 79th Division was responsible for attacking the 1282 Heights.
In order to avoid the bombardment of enemy aircraft, the three companies decided to launch an attack on the enemy that night. At about 11 o'clock in the night, the company commander led a platoon to set off, because it was the first time to fight with the American army, no experience, after the attack was launched, the soldiers rushed up with guns, after a bitter battle, occupied the first hill, but the platoon also paid a great price of casualties, and the company commander was seriously wounded. When the instructor saw the situation, he called Zou Shiyong up and asked him to take over the company commander to command the battle.
After Zou Shiyong came to the position, he found that the company commander had been shot in the abdomen and his life was in danger, and his heart was very sad. Zou Shiyong later recalled that the company commander said to him at that time: "You must remember that when you impact, do not shout to kill." The platoon suffered losses and rushed upwards with bayonets and slogans like fighting the Nationalists, only to expose the target and suffer unnecessary losses. So in the next battle, don't shout to kill, just fight quietly. ”
Because of his wounds, the company commander was killed shortly after being carried off his position. Zou Shiyong firmly remembered the words of the company commander and led the second and third platoons to quietly touch the enemy's second hill. In order to disperse enemy fire, he ordered the second platoon to attack from the front, the third platoon to assist from the flanks, and let the three platoons fight first. The enemy's fire was quickly attracted by the three platoons, and the second platoon moved forward silently, until it was more than ten meters away from the enemy before it suddenly launched an attack, the enemy was caught off guard, and the three companies quickly captured the second hill.
Next, Zou Shiyong grabbed the medicine according to the prescription, led the troops to capture the enemy's third hill, and occupied the 1282 heights at about two o'clock in the morning, successfully completing the task assigned by his superiors. Finally, after nearly a month of hard fighting, the 9th Corps, with logistical support and weapons and equipment far inferior to the enemy, severely damaged the US First Marine Division and completely annihilated the Polar Bear Regiment, making an important contribution to the victory of the second battle. After the war, Alpha Bauser, then the Operations Division of the First Marine Division, admitted that if the Chinese had sufficient logistical support and communications equipment, the Marines would never have been able to escape the Chosin Reservoir.
