Recently, Tesla released its vehicle safety report for the third and fourth quarters of 2021, and the results show that it is getting better.
Tesla reported that for vehicles using Autopilot technology, there was a collision for every 4.97 million miles traveled in the third quarter, and by the fourth quarter, this record was about 4.31 million collisions per mile traveled.
Data for the third and fourth quarters were both better than the same period last year, with 8% and 25% improvements in security, respectively.
Vehicles that do not use Autopilot technology tend to be more prone to traffic accidents. In the third quarter, the data record was a collision for every approximately 1.6 million miles traveled, and in the fourth quarter, it was recorded as a collision per 1.59 million miles traveled.
Compared to 2020 data, the third quarter performance decreased, while the fourth quarter performed better than the same period last year, and safety increased by 25%.
Tesla also compared its own safety report data with the average data of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) in recent years, and tesla's vehicle accident rate is lower than the NHTSA average data, regardless of whether Autopilot technology is applied.
From the data given by Tesla, it seems that vehicles with Autopilot technology are less likely to have accidents, but they are a bit less objective than the NHTSA data, because the NHTSA average in the United States is rarely updated, and the accident vehicles also include a large number of old cars. Tesla's comparison seems to only highlight how safe it is, and its credibility is relatively low.
