When the French Protectorate War broke out in 1917, Tang Jiyao reorganized the Jingguo Army, and Zhao Youxin was the commander of the Second Army of the Jingguo Army, and he appointed Yang Sen as the chief of staff of the army (to digress, Zhu De was the brigade commander of the Second Army at that time).
Yang Sen was able to break out of the world in the military circles, and Zhao Youxin was definitely counted as his nobleman, but Yang Sen, in the later chaotic battle between Yunnan and Sichuan, pulled an independent regiment from Zhao Youxin's command to defect to the Sichuan army.
Because Yang Sen had developed in the Dian army for many years and was familiar with its internal situation, he made a great contribution to the Sichuan army to repel the Dian army, and in the process of pursuing, he was the most radical, and even led his troops directly to attack Zhao Youxin's army.
Zhao Youxin, who was as heavy as a mountain for Yang Sen,was eventually forced to die by him.

With the merits of the battle against Yunnan, Yang Sen became famous in the Sichuan army, and his ambitions grew, and he originally wanted to drive Xiong Kewu away with a single blow, but he was defeated.
Unwillingly, Yang Sen attached himself to the warlord Wu Peifu, and the combat effectiveness of Wu Peifu's troops in the Beiyang Army was top-notch, so they did not take much effort to break through Chengdu, and Yang Sen was immediately appointed as the military governor of Sichuan and became the agent of the direct family in Sichuan.
During this period, Yang Sen's power expanded very rapidly, causing him to swell to the point where he once wanted to unify Sichuan, so he fought endlessly with Liu Xiang, Liu Wenhui and others. However, during this period, he still did some practical things, such as building schools and setting up arsenals. The performance of the 20th Army in the Battle of Songhu was indeed remarkable, they stubbornly held the old man's bridge, Yugong Temple, Xinjing bridge front, and fought with the Japanese for five days and nights, and the 18,000 troops paid more than 7,000 casualties, but they did not retreat until the friendly troops came to take over the defense.
Some people commented that the 20th Army was the most capable unit in the Battle of Songhu, except for the 88th Division of the Central Army and the Tax Police Regiment, which were the most capable units. The key is that this record is still based on the background of the poor equipment of the Sichuan Army.
