In March 1947, Chiang Kai-shek gathered more than 200,000 men and horses from Hu Zongnan, Ma Bufang, Ma Hongkui, Deng Baoshan and other units to attack Yan'an from the south, west and north.
The enemy is strong and we are weak, and after judging the situation, the chairman decided to temporarily evacuate Yan'an and move to northern Shaanxi. In this regard, the Chairman said: "If there are people who have lost their land, everyone will have land; if they have lost land, everyone will lose their land." Chiang Kai-shek fought to fight for territory and Yan'an, and we fought to capture his soldiers, capture his arms, and eliminate his living forces. Old Jiang Zhan Yan'an was lifting a stone and dropping it on his own feet. When he carries this heavy burden, we will clean him up again, and he will be unlucky. ”
On March 19, 1947, Hu Zongnan's troops occupied the empty city of Yan'an.
After that, Hu Zongnan trumpeted loudly and sent a false telegram to Chiang Kai-shek to ask for credit, which read: "The Great Victory in Yan'an, after seven days and nights of fierce fighting, our army has captured more than 50,000 enemies in service, captured countless weapons and ammunition, and is under investigation. ”
After receiving the report, Chiang Kai-shek was very happy and immediately decided: Go to Yan'an and visit Yan'an secretly.
On the morning of August 7, 1947, accompanied by Chiang Ching-kuo, Yu Jishi and others, Chiang Kai-shek flew to Yan'an on a special plane.
After Chiang Kai-shek arrived in Yan'an, Hu Zongnan took him to the Yan'an Border Area Diplomatic Hotel.
On the afternoon of August 7, Chiang Kai-shek presided over a meeting of officers at and above the brigade level in yan'an.
On the evening of August 7, Chiang Kai-shek and Hu Zongnan studied the issue of operations.
Early in the morning of August 8, under the protection of a large number of soldiers, police, special agents, and bodyguards with live ammunition, Chiang Kai-shek and others wandered around the city of Yan'an.
In the morning, surrounded by Hu Zongnan, Yu Jishi, and others, Chiang Kai-shek came to Kangda, Yangjialing, Zaoyuan, Wangjiaping, and other places to visit.
In the jujube garden, Chiang Kai-shek finally saw the cave where his old rival (the chairman) lived.
After Chiang Kai-shek entered the cave, Hu Zongnan said to him: "Principal, you see, this cave is no different from the local peasants' cave. The ground is compacted with mud and a wooden plank is laid on the kang. The doors and windows were made of old wood and not painted. The walls were peeling off, the elm table by the window was uneven, and the simple bed was made of elm nails. The same is true of the cave dwellings of Zhou, Zhu and Liu next to them. ”
In such a harsh living environment, how did he (the chairman) maintain a strong fighting spirit, and effectively command thousands of troops and horses to fight and confront the well-equipped Japanese and nationalist troops on the battlefields of the whole country, and win victories one after another? Chiang Kai-shek was shocked, he was very shocked, and stopped in the cave for a long time, thinking about this question.
Chiang Kai-shek sat in the cave for half a day.
After that, Old Jiang walked out of the cave and found a tree in the courtyard with a spinning wheel next to it.
Old Jiang pointed to the spinning wheel and asked Hu Zongnan, "What does he (the chairman) want this spinning wheel to do?" ”
Hu Zongnan said: "Yan'an is short of materials, and it is said that he (the chairman) personally spun yarn! Due to the kuomintang's military encirclement and economic blockade, Yan'an was short of materials, and in order to overcome the difficulties, the Yan'an military and civilians launched a vigorous large-scale production campaign. Chairman Zhou, Zhou Shouchang, Zhu Laozong, Ren Bishi and others are all experts in spinning thread.
He (the chairman) spins the yarn himself? Old Jiang felt incredible. Old Jiang shook the spinning wheel, squeaked, and the thread broke. Old Jiang was stunned and shook his head.
At this time, an old peasant was brought over, and Chiang Kai-shek asked, "Have you seen him [the chairman]?" Did he talk to you? ”
The old farmer said matter-of-factly, "I've seen it." See you often. He used to buy my family's dates and give them money. Say my family's dates are delicious. ”
Chiang Kai-shek asked, "What kind of clothes does he usually wear?" ”
Answer: "Coarse cloth clothes, just like those ordinary soldiers and civilians." ”
Q: "New and old?" ”
A: "Old, patched." ”
Q: "What shoes is he wearing?" ”
Answer: "Cloth shoes, straw shoes." ”
Old Jiang asked again, "What kind of dishes does he usually eat?" ”
Answer: "He often eats chili peppers, eggplants, pumpkins, tomatoes, these dishes are grown in his own field, and he often uses these to entertain guests or give them to villagers." ”
Ask, "What hobbies does he have?" ”
The old peasant replied, "Read a book, take a walk, tease the children, have a meeting, listen to a box (radio)." ”
Old Jiang asked, "When will he sleep?" ”
A: "I heard he works at night and goes to bed in the morning." ”......
After the old peasant left, Chiang Kai-shek thought about it, did not say a word, and was silent for a long time.
Hu Zongnan came over and said, "Principal, please go back to the city for dinner." ”
Leaving zaoyuan, Chiang Kai-shek returned to the Diplomatic Hotel in the Border Region. The next day, Chiang Kai-shek left Yan'an. This was the first and last time in Old Jiang's life that he had come to Yan'an.
