Chanting | Xun Zi: Although the Tao is not good, it is not done; although things are small, they are not accomplished

【Commentary】

Self-cultivation

Xunzi

【Original】

Seeing the good, the cultivation will be self-existent [1];

When you see something that is not good, you will be troubled [2] and you will introspect yourself.

Goodness is in the body, and the intermediary [3] will be self-righteous;

If there is no goodness in the body, it is true[4] that it will be self-evil.

Therefore it is not me who is in charge, and my teacher is also;

It is me and the one who is in charge, my friend also;

Those who slander me, my thief [5] also.

Therefore, the gentleman is a teacher and a relative and a friend, so that he hates his thief.

Good and insatiable, admonished by counseling, though there is no progress in desire, there is a great deal!

The villain is the opposite, causing chaos and the wicked are not themselves, causing unscrupulous and lustful people are virtuous, and the heart is like a tiger and a wolf, and the thief who acts like a beast and the wicked is also a thief.

The pro-slur, the contender is neglected, the correction is laughter, the most loyal is the thief, although the desire is not destroyed, it is a blessing!

The poem says: "Whoops, whoops, whoops." If it is not plotted, it is violated; if it is not plotted, it is according to [6]." This is also true.

【Notes】

[1] Xiu Ran: The appearance of the whole thing. Deposit: Inspection, review.

[2] Qiǎo Ran: The look of fear.

[3] Jieran: The appearance of solidity.

[4] It means that there is a disaster in the body. Same as "disaster".

[5] Thief: Harm.

[6] The six sentences of "噏噏(xī)": Here is quoted from the Book of Poetry, Xiaoya Xiaowu. Sigh, echo the look. Zለ (ǐ), slanderous, slanderous. Uh- and 'd'. Holes, very, ten. Zang (zānɡ), good, good. With, furniture, all.

【Translation】

When you see a good deed, you must respectfully check yourself whether you also have this good deed;

When you see unkind behavior, you must be vigilant and reflect on whether you also have such unkindness.

The goodness in one's own body must be firmly maintained;

Unwholesomeness in the body must be feared as a calamity.

So the person who criticizes me and says it appropriately is my teacher;

The person who praises me and says it appropriately is my friend;

Whoever flatters me is a thief who harms me.

Therefore, a gentleman respects his teacher and is close to his friends, but he deeply resents thieves.

Loving kindness and never being satisfied, hearing the rules and being able to quit tissing, even if you don't want to grow, you can't do it!

The villain is the opposite, extremely rebellious and disgusted by others to criticize himself, extremely unworthy but hopes that others will think that he is virtuous, and his heart is like a tiger and a wolf, acting like a beast, but he hates others to regard him as a thief.

Being close to the flattering people, alienating those who speak out, treating the act of practicing formal persuasion as ridicule, and treating those who are loyal to the direct counsel as a thief, such a person cannot do it without perishing!

The Book of Verses says, "How sad it is to be in tune with those who are adversaries, and to hate and slander those who have slandered them!" All good opinions are not listened to, but all bad opinions are obeyed." That's the kind of person it is talking about.

The degree of flat goodness [1], after Pengzu [2], is used to cure qi and maintain health; in the name of self-cultivation, it is accompanied by Yao and Yu.

It is advisable to pass through the times, to deal with the poor [3], and the letter of etiquette is also.

Whoever uses flesh, will, and knowing is ruled by etiquette, and is not violated by etiquette [4];

Food and drink, clothing, dwelling places, movements, and stillness are caused by etiquette and festivals [5], and by rituals[ 6]

Appearance, attitude, advance and retreat, tendency, from etiquette to elegance, not by etiquette is stubborn, vulgar and wild [7].

If the old man is rude, he will not be born, if he is rude, he will not succeed, and if the country is rude, he will not be restless.

The Poem says: "Etiquette stroke, laughter pawn [8]". This is also true.

[1] Flat goodness: The law of the good that is neither present nor present. Flat, through 'all over'. Degree: Dao.

[2] After: Here is the meaning of following. Peng Zu: The legendary old life star, eight hundred years old.

[3] Poor: The dilemma.

[4] Confusion: Coma. Bo, through the 'paradox'. Lifting: Slow relaxation.

[5] By: Follow. And section: appropriate, coordinated.

[6] Touch into the disease: It means that every move will happen to the disease.

[7] Yigu: Arrogance. Seclusion: Partiality is not right.

[8] Two sentences of "etiquette": The poem quoted here is from the Book of Poetry, Xiaoya Chutz. 卒, finish, complete. Get it, get it right.

If a gentleman has a way of not being good, if he uses it to cure qi and maintain health, his life can follow Pengzu; if he uses it to cultivate his morality, his reputation can be compared with that of Yao and Yu.

Suitable for both access and embarrassment, there is only courtesy and faith.

Where there is flesh, will, and thought, according to etiquette, it is harmonious and smooth, and if it is not according to etiquette, it is chaotic and slack;

Eating, living, talking and behaving, acting according to etiquette must be appropriate, and if you do not follow etiquette, every move will be wrong.

Appearance, manners, advance and retreat, sprinting, slow walking, polite and elegant, rude is arrogant, vulgar and rude.

Therefore, people cannot survive without etiquette, they cannot succeed in doing things without etiquette, and the country is not at peace without etiquette.

The Book of Verses says, "If the etiquette is completely in accordance with the law, the words and jokes will be appropriate." That's what it means.

Those who are good before them are called teachings, and those who are good and [1] are called smooth;

Those who are not good to the ancestors are called slanderous, and those who are not good and people are called slanderous.

Yes and no [2] is called knowledge, and non-yes and non are stupid.

Wounding the good and slandering [3], harming the good and the thief. Yes and no, yes, no, no Stealing goods is known as theft, concealment is deceitful, and easy to say [4] is the birthday.

Funsha [5] Impermanence is indefinite, and Poly renunciation is called a thief.

More knowledge, less shallow; more idle [6], rare ugly. It is difficult to enter [7], and it is easy to forget and leak. Few and rational, many and chaotic [8].

[1] and: echo, response.

[2] Yes and no: It means to be able to distinguish between right and wrong. Yes, right. No, wrong. The first "is" and "not" are used as verbs to indicate both positive and negative.

[3] Slander: Using words to frame and attack people.

[4] Easy to speak: speak easily, speak rashly.

[5] Fun Roundup: Trade-off. Fun, pass "take".

[6] Idle: Elegant.

[7] Tí: Sluggish.

[8] 秏 (mào): Pass "眊", faint.

It is the teachings that guide people with goodness, and the harmony that responds to people with goodness;

It is the one who guides people with unwholesomeness, and it is the one who goes along with people with unwholesomeness.

Being able to distinguish what is right is right and what is wrong is called wisdom, and recognizing what is right is wrong and what is wrong is called ignorance.

Hurting good people is called framing, and framing good people is called treachery. Insisting that what is right is right, and what is wrong is wrong is integrity. It is the thief who steals things, it is fraud that conceals one's actions, and it is the indulgence that is rash and indiscriminate.

Those who choose without certainty are called impermanence, and those who abandon morality for the sake of profit are called the most thieves.

Those who hear more are broad, those who hear less are shallow; those who are more visible are elegant, and those who are less common are lonely. Difficult progress is called slowness, and easy to forget is called omission. When things can be cited and methodical is called governance, and many and chaotic is called shabu.

The Art of Healing Qi and Nourishing the Heart:

If the flesh is strong, it is soft to reconcile [1];

Knowing more and more deeply, it is easy to be good [2];

Courage and fierceness [3], supplemented by Daoshun [4];

Qi gives convenience [5], then the festival stops;

Narrow and small [6], then the outline [7] is broad;

Lowly, late, greedy [8], then resist [9] to high ambition;

If the mediocre are scattered, they rob [10] their teachers and friends;

Neglect [11], then burn [12] to bring calamity;

Foolishness [13] is combined with liturgy and contemplation.

Whoever cures qi and cultivates the heart, Mo Dao yu li, Mo wants to get a teacher, Mo Shenyi [14] is good.

Fu is also the art of curing qi and nourishing the heart.

[1] Reconciliation: Debugging peace.

[2] Yi Liang: Easy to be gentle.

[3] Fierce: obedient, obedient.

[4] Daoshun: Guidance. Tao, guide. Shun, through the "training".

[5] Qi to give convenience: both mean quick and imprudent.

[6] Small biǎn: small-minded.

[7] Outline: Open.

[8] Humble: Willing to be humble. Severe delay: delay.

[9] Resistance: Lift.

[10] Robbery: Take it. Refers to the use of teachers and friends to remove its old nature.

[11] Piào: Thin and light. Abandonment: Self-abandonment.

[12] 炤: Same as "illumination", which clearly means to tell it.

[13] Foolishness: Simple and simple. Money, sincerely. Què: Upright and simple. Humble, simple, cautious.

[14] One: Not one is the same. In Xunzi's thought, "one" usually refers to a single good gift, and it is believed that a single good gift can be passed through the gods and reach the state of deification.

The way to adjust the mood and cultivate the body and mind is:

A man with strong flesh and blood will reconcile with him with peace of mind;

Those who think too deeply and complexly, use ease and gentleness to harmonize him;

A man of a brave and violent temperament enlightens him and makes him docile;

A man who moves quickly and quickly restrains him with proper manners;

A man with a narrow temperament expands him with an open mind;

A man who is lowly ambitious, slow-minded, and greedy for small profits elevates him with lofty ambitions;

A person who is inferior and mediocre and incompetent, use good teachers and friends to help him;

The man who is lazy and frivolous, who abandons himself, warns him with the things of misfortune;

A person who is too simple and simple, he will use lilly to embellish him.

The most direct way to adjust rational feelings and cultivate the body and mind is to follow the etiquette, the most important thing is to get a good teacher, and the most miraculous thing is to concentrate.

This is the way to adjust the mood and cultivate the body and mind.

Zhi yi xiu is proud and rich [1], morally heavy is light on the prince, introspective and external things are light.

Transmission [2] says: "Gentlemen serve things, and villains serve things." That's it.

Work hard and be at ease, do it; benefit less and righteousness more, do it.

It is better to be in a disorderly manner than to be poor and obedient [4].

Therefore, good farmers do not cultivate for water and drought, good farmers do not fold [5] do not city, and gentlemen do not slack off for poverty.

[1] Aspirations: Aspirations. Xiu: A common phrase in Xunzi's book, which means correction, cultivation, and beauty.

[2] Transmission: Words transmitted in ancient books. In the pre-Qin classics, it is often used to refer to the quotation of ancient words.

[3] Chaotic Monarch: The tyrannical king of a great power.

[4] Poor King: The king of embarrassment in small countries. Shun: Smooth. This refers to the principle of going along the way.

[5] Discount: Sale at a loss. Discount, loss. Read, sell.

If you cultivate with intentions, you will be proud of the rich, if you advocate morality, you will despise the prince, and if you think of yourself without guilt, you will not be moved by external objects.

The ancient book says: "A gentleman serves foreign objects and is not dominated by foreign objects." That's what it means.

Although the body is hard, but the heart is at ease, do it; if the benefits are small and more moral, do it.

It is better to serve the tyrant of the kingdom than to serve the king of the small kingdom who can go along with the way.

Therefore, good farmers will not fail to cultivate their fields because of floods and droughts, good merchants will not do business because of losses, and gentlemen will not slack off because of poverty.

Respectful and faithful, courteous and righteous and loving people[1], running rampant [2] the world, although it is difficult to be poor, people are not precious.

The things of labor are scrambled first, and the things of Rao Le [3] can be made, honest and honest, restrained and detailed [4], and run rampant in the world, although they are trapped in four places, no one can do anything.

The body is solid [5] and the heart is deceitful, the technique is smooth, the ink is fine and dirty [6], and it runs rampant in the world, although it reaches all directions, no one is inferior.

The things of labor are stolen and turned away [7], the things of rao are exchanged without bending [8], the violations [9] are not repented, and the cheng service is not recorded [10], and the world is rampant, although it reaches all directions, no one will abandon it.

[1] Technique: Dharma, obedience. Lover: Benevolent. People, through "benevolence".

[2] Rampant: Widespread.

[3] Rao Le: Abundance and pleasure.

[4] Strict and detailed: Abide by the law and observe things clearly.

[5] 倨: Proud. Solid: Solid.

[6] Shun and Mo: as "caution" and "ink". Cautious, cautious, Warring States thinker, whose doctrine is huang lao, the name of the punishment, "shangfa" and "heavy force". Mo, Mo Zhai, founder of the Warring States Mojia Doctrine, advocated frugality. Jing: As "love", temperament. Dirt: Dirty. This refers to indecent words.

[7] Stealing Confucianism: Stubborn and lazy and afraid of things. Steal, steal. Confucianism, cowardice. Slip off: Gentle push off.

[8] Yu Dui: Eloquence. Exchange, through the "sharp", fast action, fast. No curve: Straight, means unyielding.

[9] Disobedience: Evil. Repel, evil.

[10] Cheng Gong: Pass the "desire to do". Recorder: Pass "catch", be cautious.

With a respectful physique and faithful heart, following etiquette and benevolence in heart, then walking all over the world, even if he is not reused and trapped in the land of Siyi, people do not disrespect him.

Laborious and hard things are done first, and things that are comfortable and enjoyable are given to others, upright and simple, honest and trustworthy, strict and law-abiding, and sensible, then go all over the world, even if they suffer poverty and hardship to the land of the Four Yi, they will not be appointed by no one.

His physique is arrogant and his heart is deceitful, and he follows the doctrine of prudence and Mozi and his heart is chaotic and dirty, so he travels all over the world, even if he is accessible everywhere, people do not despise him.

The things of labor are lazy and shirked, the things of pleasure are quick and unyielding, the evil and dishonest, blindly pursuing their own selfish desires without knowing prudence, then all over the world, even if they are accessible everywhere, people do not despise him.

Line and supply wings [1], non-stained also [2];

Line and bow down [3], non-striking [4] also;

Evenly [5] and lean down first, not fear also.

The monks want to cultivate themselves alone, and not to offend others[6].

[1] Provision: Pass "gong", respectfully. Wing: Respectful.

[2] Nào: Stuck in mud. Oh, mud.

[3] Bow your head: Bow your head.

[4] Strike: Colliding with something.

[5] Even vision: two people look at each other and look at each other.

[6] More ordinary people: ordinary people.

Walk respectfully and carefully, not for fear of getting stuck in the mud;

Walk with your head down, not for fear of bumping into something;

The two looked at each other and bowed down first, not fearing each other.

This is because a gentleman wants to cultivate his own character, and does not want to offend the worldly people because of this.

A thousand miles a day, and a horse ride is also a thousand miles.

Will be infinitely infinite and infinite and infinite?

Its broken bones are broken, and they cannot be matched for life;

If there is a stop [1], then although it is a thousand miles away, it is either late or fast, or first or later, and it is not possible to reach it.

Those who do not know the trail [2] will be infinitely infinite and infinite. Meaning [3] there is also a stop to it?

The inspection of the husband "firm white", "similar and different", and "thick and thick" [4] is not unaware, but the gentleman does not argue, and stops.

It is not difficult to rely on the journey of Kui [5], but it is not difficult for a gentleman to do so.

Therefore, it is said: "If I am late and wait for me [6], if I do it, then it will be late, or fast, or first, or later, and it is not possible for him to go with him." ”

Therefore, the footsteps are not restless, and the lame turtle is thousands of miles;

Tired of the soil and not quitting, Qiu Shan Chong[7] became.

Disgust [8] its source, open its desecration [9], the rivers can be exhausted;

One in and one in, one left and one right, six Ji will not be.

The xiang county of the talent of the other person [10], is it like a lame turtle and a six-legged foot?

However, the lame turtle is caused, and the six ji are not, there is no reason for it, or for it, or not for it!

Although the Tao is not good, it is not done; although it is small, it is not impossible.

He who is also a man who has many days [11] is not far away from [12].

[1] Stop: The end, the end, the end. In the Confucian classics, the word "stop" has a special meaning, referring to the goal of wholeheartedly pursuing, such as archery, and the target of the arrow shot is 'stop'. The so-called "stop at the highest good", "stop at learning", etc. can be understood in this sense.

[2] Trails: Roads.

[3] Meaning: through "inhibition", or.

[4] Jianbai, homogeneity: refers to the doctrine of the famous Warring States masters Huishi and Gongsun Long, there are solid stones instead of stones, white horses instead of horses, and the same is different and the same propositions. Thick or thick: It is also Huishi's theory, which talks about the problem of infinity in space. It is said that this is a proposition put forward by Deng Xian in the Spring and Autumn Period.

[5] Yi Kui: A grotesque and vulgar act. Leaning, pronounced "odd". Qui, big.

[6] "Late and late" sentence: There is a suspicion of omission here, so let's interpret it according to the general view. Scholars passed on this saying. Late, wait.

[7] Chong: Pass the "end", the end.

[8] Disgust: Plugging.

[9] Blasphemy: Ditch.

[10] County: same as "hanging", disparity.

[11] Many free days: Finger laziness.

[12] Entry and exit: The meaning is difficult to understand, according to Wang Niansun as "out of the person".

A good horse can walk a thousand miles a day, and a bad horse can walk for ten days.

Want to go on the path of infinity and chase the place where there is no end?

In this way, even if you go to the fracture of the bone, you will not be able to reach it in a lifetime;

If there is an end and a purpose, then although a thousand miles are far away, it is only slow or fast, or before or after the problem, how can it not go?

Those who do not know the path go to the infinite path and chase the place where there is no end? Or is there an end?

The arguments of "firm whiteness", "similarities and differences", and "thickness and thickness" cannot be said to be unsophisticated, but gentlemen do not argue, because gentlemen have their own goals to pursue.

Grotesque and vulgar behavior is not difficult to do, but gentlemen do not do it, because gentlemen have their own goals to pursue.

So the old saying is passed down, and learning is like walking. The man who got the way, waiting for me in front, I tried to catch up, so sooner or later, first or later, how could I not reach the same place?

So step by step, even a lame turtle can reach thousands of miles;

Layer by layer, the flat land will eventually become a hill.

Block the source, open the ditch, and the river will dry up.

One moment forward, one moment back, one moment left, one moment right, six Ji could not reach the distance.

The difference in talent between people and people, where will there be such a big difference between the lame turtle and the six ji! However, the lame turtle can reach, the six ji can not reach, this is no other reason, just because some do, some do not do ah!

Although the road is close, it is impossible to reach it without walking; although things are small, they will not succeed if they do not do it.

Those who are idle all day long, his achievements will not exceed ordinary people.

Good Dharma [1] And the line, the soldier also;

Du Zhi and Body [2], Gentleman also;

Qi Ming [3] is inexhaustible, and so are the saints.

If people are unable to do so, they will be idle [4];

If there is a law and there is no righteousness, then the canal is natural [5];

According to the law and deep in its kind [6], and then warmly and warmly [7].

[1] Law: Etiquette.

[2] Du: Firm. Body: Implemented.

[3] Qi Ming: This refers to intellectual agility.

[4] Confusion: The look of being at a loss.

[5] Canal: Unguarded, cramped and uneasy.

[6] Deep: Deeply aware. Class: Unified class refers to being able to imitate according to etiquette and grasp various things.

[7] Wen Wenran: The appearance of moisturizing. This refers to the excellent travel is not urgent.

A person who loves etiquette and can act according to it is a soldier;

A gentleman who is determined and can practice what he preaches is a gentleman;

The one who is quick and not exhausted is the saint.

If people do not have the law of etiquette, they are at a loss;

If there is a law but does not know its deep meaning, it will be dazed and unobstructed;

According to the etiquette, you can understand its system, and then you can travel without hurrying!

Liturgists, so the body is also;

Teacher, so the right ceremony also.

Rude, why straighten out?

Without a teacher, is it also true that I know the etiquette?

Etiquette, however, is the love of the ceremony [1] also;

Shi Yun and Yun are Zhi Ruo Shi Ye.

The love of the entourage, the knowledge of the master, is also a saint.

Therefore incivility, is impossible also;

Non-teacher, non-teacher also.

It is not a teacher and is good for self-use, for example, it is like blindly distinguishing colors, deafness and sound, and giving up chaos and doing nothing [2].

Therefore, those who learn also learn, the ritual law also.

The husband is also a teacher who is a righteous person and is self-respecting [3].

"Poetry" Yun: "Do not know, Shun Emperor's rule [4]". This is also true.

[1] Affectionate Annunciation: It means that it seems that nature is at peace, not acquired.

[2] She: Except. Delusion: Rebellion and arrogance.

[3] Orthography: the correct standard, that is, exemplary and exemplary. Self-safety: Feel at ease here.

[4] Two sentences of "ignorance": The poem quoted here is found in the Book of Poetry, Daya Huangyi. Emperor, Oh My God.

Rituals are used to straighten out the body and mind;

Teachers are used to correct etiquette.

Without etiquette, what is used to correct one's behavior?

Without a teacher, how do I know that Li is like this?

Etiquette is prescribed as it is done, and this is the nature to be content with etiquette;

The teacher does what he says, and this is wisdom is the same as the teacher.

To be able to be content with affection and wisdom as a teacher, this is a saint.

Therefore, to violate the démonial is not to take the dharma as the dharma;

To disobey the teacher is not to take the teacher as the teacher.

Not following the teachings and regulations of the teacher, but preferring to go it alone, is like letting the blind man discern the color, and the deaf person discerning the voice, and there is nothing else to do but pervert and arrogant things.

Therefore, the fundamental point of learning lies in the etiquette.

As for teachers, they set an example for people with their words and deeds, and the most valuable thing is to teach people to do this with peace of mind.

The Book of Verses says, "I don't know why I did this, but it is in accord with the natural laws of heaven." That's what it means.

Duan Shu Shundi [1] can be described as a good person;

If you are good at learning Sunmin [2], then jun [3] is supreme, and you can be a gentleman.

Stealing confucianism, shamelessness and eating, can be described as evil and less;

If you are not smooth[4], and if you are a dangerous thief and not a brother, you can be said to be unknown [5] And although you are caught in torture, you can also be punished.

The old man [6] and the strong return, the poor and the well-connected [7], the meditative [8] and the unrequited, and the virtuous are not humble.

Man has these three lines, although there are great transgressions, the heavens will not succeed!

[1] Shundi: Shun shun filial piety, respect for the elderly. Shun, yi shun. Brother, with "Ti".

[2] Sunmin: Humble and agile.

[3] Jun: Pass "uniform", equal.

[4] Toughness: Debauchery and fierceness. Ti, the same as "swing".

[5] Details: Tong "Xiang", auspicious.

[6] Old man: Respect the old man with the courtesy of the old man.

[7] Poor and poor: Persecution of the poor. The first "old" and "poor" here are used as verbs. TONG: A man of merit.

[8] To meditate: It means to act without seeking knowledge.

Be upright and simple, respect the elderly, and be said to be a good youth!

If we are humble and diligent, then there will be only those who are equal to him, and there will be no one who can surpass him, and he can become a gentleman.

Lazy and stubborn, timid and afraid of things, not shameful and lazy to do, can be said to be a bad youth;

Coupled with the fact that debauchery and fierceness are not inferior, sinister and harmful to people and do not respect the elders, that is an unlucky person, even if they are punished and killed.

Respect the elderly, and the prime-age will belong to him;

Do not despise those who are in a difficult situation of persecution, then the wise will gather;

Do good deeds without seeking knowledge, and do not seek retribution for kindness to others, so that both the wise and the unscrupulous will come to him.

Man has the above three kinds of characters, even if he encounters a great calamity, God will not let him fall into the calamity.

A gentleman's pursuit of profit is also slightly [1], and his far-reaching harm is also early, his avoidance of humiliation is also afraid, and his deeds are also courageous.

A gentleman is poor and ambitious, rich and courteous, An Yan [2] and the flesh is not lazy, the labor is hard and the appearance is not dry [3], the anger is not snatched, the joy is not given.

Gentlemen are poor and ambitious, Long [4] Renye; rich and courteous, killing power [5] also; An Yan and flesh and blood, Cambodian Liye [6]; labor and appearance is not withered, good text [7] also; anger is not to be seized, joy is not to give, it is the law to win private also.

Book [8] says, "Do not do well, do the way of the king." There is no evil, follow the way of the king [9]". This is the word that a gentleman can overcome selfish desires with righteousness.

[1] Slightly: Skimming, not being preoccupied.

[2] An Yan: Idle, idle.

[3] Well: fatigue, tiredness. Ku: Pass the "shackles", and be reckless, casual.

[4] Long: Respect.

[5] Shài (shài) posture: Do not bully others with power. Kill, weaken.

[6] Cambodia: pick, choose. RB: Etiquette.

[7] Good text: refers to paying attention to etiquette. The text, the original text is "intercourse", due to the proximity and error, according to the context of the meaning of the change, etiquette, civilization.

[8] "Book": Refers to the "Book of Shang".

[9] Four sentences of "nothingness": The Shang Shu Hong Fan quoted here. Well done, personal preference. Evil, personal hatred. Road, road. This refers to the etiquette formulated by the previous kings.

Gentlemen are very indifferent to the pursuit of selfish interests, far away from evil early, vigilant and avoided shame, and extremely courageous to take responsibility for morality.

A gentleman is poor but ambitious, rich but respectful and courteous, flesh and blood are not slack when he is idle, he does not look contemptuous and casual when he is tired, he does not punish too much when he is angry, and he does not give too much reward when he is happy.

Poverty and ambition are great because of respect for benevolence; wealth and courtesy are not arrogant; when there is idleness, the flesh is not slack, it is done according to etiquette; when tired, the appearance is not contemptuous and casual, it is to pay attention to etiquette; when angry, not to punish too much, when happy not to give too much, is to be able to restrain selfish intentions with etiquette.

The Book of Shang says, "Do not do things according to personal preferences, but follow the right path of the previous kings." Do not act according to personal hatred, but do it according to the etiquette of the kings." This means that a gentleman can use righteousness over selfishness.

The article first pointed out that self-cultivation is a major event related to personal safety and the survival of the country. Then he pointed out that a gentleman has the so-called "degree of omniscience", that is, the way of not going forward and not being good, and with this he can cure his qi and nourish his mind, and he can cultivate himself and strengthen himself, and his merits are great. This "degree of all goodness" is the liturgy. When talking about specific cultivation methods, the article points out that the art of self-cultivation and cultivation of the mind, "Mo Dao yu li, mo to get the teacher, Mo Shen yi good", emphasizing the role of the right body of the li and the role of the teacher in self-cultivation, as well as the importance of perseverance and single-mindedness. Finally, it is pointed out that those who have moral cultivation can be proud and rich, morally important, and light princes, travel all over the world and be respected by others, and receive the blessings of heaven.

【Xunzi】

Xun Zi (c. 313 BC – 238 BC), courtesy name, was a Han Chinese, a native of the Zhao state of Xi'an (present-day Xi'anze County, Shanxi), a famous thinker, writer, and politician of the late Warring States period, and one of the representative figures of Confucianism. Shi Renzun was honored with the title of "Qing", and in the Western Han Dynasty, because he avoided the Han Xuan Emperor Liu's inquiry, because "Xun" and "Sun" were pronounced in ancient sounds, they were also called Sun Qing.
