In January 1949, Li Zongren was inaugurated as acting president of the Republic of China.
After taking office, Li Zongren immediately expressed his willingness to negotiate peace with the Communist Party, but in the subsequent negotiations he abandoned the historical opportunity provided to him by the Chinese Communist Party, did not change his reactionary position, and refused to sign the Internal Peace Agreement.
Although Li Zongren had a deep contradiction with Chiang Kai-shek, he eventually sided with Chiang Kai-shek's reactionary clique and insisted on making enemies of the Communist Party and the Chinese people. This determined the defeat of the reactionary Kuomintang government and also determined his own tragic fate.
However, if Li Zongren had known at the beginning that Chiang Kai-shek had tried to assassinate him, it might have been of some benefit to him to change his position. Unfortunately, Li Zongren learned this inside story too late!

It was August 1926, and the Northern Expeditionary Army marched triumphantly to capture Changsha. The General Headquarters of the Northern Expeditionary Army was also stationed in Changsha. Li Zongren, who was on the way to the Northern Expedition, had already made many military achievements.
One day, Li Zongren came to Chiang Kai-shek's headquarters to discuss official business. Chiang Kai-shek sat at his desk, and when the two of them were chatting with great interest, suddenly, Chiang Kai-shek's words turned sharply and asked Li Zongren how old he was this year?
"Thirty-seven years old." Li Zongren replied inexplicably.
"I'm four years older than you, let's change the post!" Chiang Kai-shek said very kindly and naturally.

One day in November 1948, Shen Drunk, the head of the Kuomintang secret service who was serving as the head of the Yunnan Provincial Station of the Secret Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense, suddenly received an urgent telegram from the director of the bureau, Mao Renfeng, asking him to come to Nanjing immediately, and immediately set off.

Shen Drunk understood that Chiang Kai-shek was actually hinting at himself that in order to complete the task, he was ready to make sacrifices.
It is worth mentioning that during this conversation of more than half an hour, Chiang Kai-shek never said who he was calling for the killing, and Shen Was not surprised. He knew that this was chiang kai-shek's usual method. In order to prevent Li Zongren from suddenly leaving Nanjing, the "Special Operations Group" is also preparing to shoot down Li Zongren's plane in the air, which can achieve the goal of killing Li under the pretext of "plane crash" and take this as the best strategy.
To this end, they opened a small grocery store as a cover on a small street leading to the airport outside the Guanghua Gate, and specially installed a telephone so that when Li Zongren was found to go to the airport, he could immediately report in the prescribed code language by telephone, and Mao Renfeng notified the two fighter planes that were ready at any time to follow Li Zongren's landline. As soon as Li Zongren left the skies over Nanjing, he shot and destroyed the plane.
At that time, most of the Gui army was concentrated in the Anhui area, so they also bought a wooden house near the railway station to set up a cigarette stall, and prepared to rush to Li Zongren as soon as he left by train, and snipe at the small stations where the train stopped along the way.

At that time, Chiang Kai-shek was considering whether to temporarily retire and have Li Zongren acting president to wait for US aid or Zhang Qun to go to Japan to recruit mercenaries, or simply kill Li Zongren and continue to rely on the natural dangers of the Yangtze River.
During that period of time, Mao Renfeng went to see Chiang Kai-shek every day, and every day he told Shen Drunk not to leave, to make all preparations at any time, and to wait for Chiang Kai-shek's words, no matter day or night, he had to carry out it immediately. After preparing to kill Li Zongren, he killed several Gui clan leaders in Nanjing.

On January 20, 1949, Mao Renfeng went to Shen Drunk and said that Chiang Kai-shek had changed his mind, which ended the work of the "Special Action Group."

Talking about that time, Li Zongren recalled that he only felt that someone was paying attention to his actions, but he never thought that Chiang Kai-shek wanted to kill him. Thinking of this, Li Zongren sighed and said, "You know, Mr. Jiang and I are brothers who have changed stickers and worshiped the handle, and every time we meet, he is very kind to me!" ”
