According to the "Industry and Commerce Times" report, Apple's self-developed 5G baseband (modem) and supporting RF IC has completed the design, recently began trial production and sample delivery, is expected to be tested with major operators in 2022 (field test), and the iPhone 15 launched in 2023 will fully adopt Apple's 5G baseband and RF IC chips.
Apple's first generation of 5G baseband will support both Sub-6GHz and mmWave (millimeter wave), using TSMC 5nm process, while RF IC will use TSMC 7nm process, the industry is expected to be mass production in 2023.
Based on Apple's stock of about 200 million iPhone mobile phones per generation, the total wafer volume of the first generation of 5G chips applied to the iPhone 15 will be as high as 150,000 pieces, and the total 7nm of the supporting RF IC can reach up to 80,000 pieces, which means that TSMC's 5/7nm production capacity will be eaten up to a large part, and even this part of the production capacity may be completely eaten by Apple.

However, Apple will not completely use its own 5G baseband chip from the beginning.
Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala has previously said that it is expected that Apple will use Qualcomm's 5G modem in the iPhone models shipped in 2023, implying that Apple will not rely entirely on self-developed baseband chips, or will purchase Qualcomm's baseband.
The self-developed baseband chip can definitely bring some new advantages to the iPhone, such as more power saving, etc., but the signal may not necessarily be improved, after all, the most restrictive Apple signal is actually its body design that causes the reception and transmission of the RF IC to be limited, and the signal improvement brought by the new baseband is estimated to be very limited.
