The story of the unjust case between Yang Naiwu and Xiao Cabbage in the late Qing Dynasty can be described as a household name, known as '', but looking at the photos seems to be a bit exaggerated, and there is also a point that as a child of a poor family, Xiao Cabbage did not wrap his feet.
Why is this old photo in France? What is the origin of this? First, let's briefly review the beginning and end of the Yang Naiwu and Xiao Cabbage unjust prison case. Yang Naiwu (1841-1914), a native of Yuhang, Zhejiang, was a xiucai in his 20s and a candidate in the 33rd year old. In the same year as Zhongju, Ge Pinlian, who was also a Yuhang person, and his new wife Bi Xiugu temporarily rented in the Yang family because of housing shortages.

18-year-old Bi Xiugu was born white and beautiful, tall and tall, usually like to wear a green top, tie a white apron, the neighbors gave her a nickname called "little cabbage".
Ge Pinlian looks like Wu Dalang, working as a helper in a tofu shop in the county town, and usually does not go home, so Xiao Cabbage often eats with Yang Naiwu's family, and sometimes Yang Naiwu also teaches her to read and write.
Because of the close relationship, rumors spread over time, and rumors spread that "sheep (Yang) eat cabbage". In order to dispel the gossip, Ge Pinlian and Xiao Cabbage soon moved out of the Yang family, and the two sides no longer interacted.
In October of that year, Ge Pinlian died of a violent illness due to fire madness, and the Ge family thought that the cause of death was suspicious, so they reported to the officials to Yuhang County. There was a lot of discussion in the outside world, saying that Yang Naiwu had an affair with Xiao Cabbage, and Liu Xitong of Zhixian County, who had always had a grudge with Yang Naiwu, believed that Yang Naiwu and Xiao Cabbage had committed adultery and poisoning and plotted to kill her husband.
In order to kill the two of them, Liu Xitong bent the law for personal gain, tortured to extract confessions, sentenced Xiao Cabbage to murder her husband, and sentenced Ling Chi; sentenced Yang Naiwu to adultery and murder, and planned to be beheaded and shown to the public. The case was reported to the Hangzhou Government, the Zhejiang Inspectorate, and the Criminal Department layer by layer, and it was almost a foregone conclusion.
With the help of several of Yang Naiwu's friends, his wife Zhan Caifeng and sister Yang Juzhen went to Beijing twice to sue for the "imperial complaint" to seek red revenge, and Hu Xueyan, a red-top businessman in Zhejiang, also funded all the expenses for going to Beijing. After three years of repeated trials and repeated reviews, the "Declaration" also carried out in-depth follow-up reports on this case, and Yang Naiwu and Xiao Cabbage caused a sensation in the country for a while.

On December 9, 1876, under the personal interrogation of Empress Dowager Cixi, Shangshu Sang Chunrong of the Punishment Department led a special team of more than 50 people and all the people involved in the case to Haihui Temple. A few days ago, after more than a month of long-distance transportation, Ge Pinlian's coffin had been transported from Yuhang to the Haihui Temple in Beijing to open the coffin for autopsy.
On February 16, 1877, Yang Naiwu and Xiao Cabbage were finally acquitted. Yang Naiwu's daughter Yang Maoyu (died in December 1967) left an oral account in 1963:
According to Yang Naiwu's account before his death, the autopsy site of Haihui Temple was full of onlookers, and a French reporter was also present. When the coroner declared the body non-toxic, the French reporter excitedly ran to Yang Naiwu and Xiao Cabbage, shouting loudly with Chinese "Non-toxic!" innocuity!
