While promoting the development of the ancient city of Dezhou, the South Canal also has a large sand content in the river and the narrow and curved river channel, so every summer and autumn rainy season will be chaotic and troublesome, and many times due to the destruction of the embankment caused by flooding, to varying degrees, endangering the safety of the people on both sides of the river. More importantly, its generalization will affect the normal operation of the imperial grain transportation.
To this end, the rulers of the Ming and Qing dynasties have repeatedly rectified and treated the South Canal, of which the excavation of "river reduction" is one of the more important measures.
Reduced river: that is, a tributary river that reduces the amount of water flowing in the main river. That is, while ensuring the normal navigation of the main river, the method of excavating tributary rivers is used to reduce or divert the water potential. In order to ensure the safety of the main channel of the South Canal, the Ming and Qing dynasties successively excavated five rivers on the South Canal: the Four Daughters Temple in Enxian County, the Sentinel Horse Camp in Dezhou, the Jiedi in Cangzhou, the Xingji in Qingxian County, and the Jinghai Horse Factory. Two of these five rivers are in the Texas area.
In order to divert the river safely, the ancients built a rolling dam on the embankment of the main channel of the South Canal to distribute the floodwater. What is a "rolling dam (overflow dam)": that is, at the junction of the main river channel and the river (tributary) channel, according to the requirements of the safe navigation of the main river channel vessels, a stone dam of suitable height is built.
That is, when the water in the main channel rises to a certain height, it can freely flow from the top of the stone dam and roll into the river channel, playing a role in diversion. When the main channel flows below the stone dam, the river continues to flow forward. In this way, the normal passage of passing boats is ensured, and the flood can be diverted to ensure the safety of the river.
According to the "Ming Shi Song Li Biography", "Nine years of orders to meet and pass through the river. However, by the end of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court was incompetent, officials were corrupt, and the national strength was declining, and there were many dangers. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the whistle horse camp reduced the river rolling dam was reconstructed and repaired, so the sentry horse camp reduced the river operation normally again. The origin of Zhazi Village
The Dezhou Sentinel Horse Camp Reduction River, also known as the "North Branch River", starts at the rolling dam built in the village of Zhazi on the east bank of the South Canal, and flows eastward through the east and west Changzhuang Villages, flows to the west of Caocun to join the ancient "Hook Pan River", flows in the Hook Pan River to the vicinity of Yuquan Zhuang in Wuqiao County, and then flows into the "Four Daughters Temple Reduction River" and returns to the sea together.
The rolling dam of the Sentry Horse Camp River reduction is a stony rolling dam known as the "sluice gate". It was built on a levee about 6 km northwest of Texas City on the east bank of the South Canal. The site and ruins of the stone dam are still there today.
