At CES 2022 in Las Vegas on January 5, 2022, Sony Chairman, President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida showcased a new prototype of his Vision S concept electric vehicle and officially announced that Sony Group is launching a new division, Sony Mobility Inc., which will begin commercializing its electric vehicles.

At the CES Sony launch booth, the company showcased an existing Sony Vision-S sedan unveiled at CES last year. This year, the company also showcased a prototype of a new model, the Sony Vision-SUV, on its product line.

Before showcasing the prototype of the new Vision-SUV, Yoshida said: "We were very excited after the vision-S was shown [last year], which prompted us to think further about how we can bring creativity and technology to another, to change the experience from one place to another. This is our new Vision-S SUV. Vision-S was developed on the basis of safety, adaptability and entertainment. Safety has always been our top priority when it comes to creating comfortable mobile experiences. That didn't change when this SUV was made. A total of 40 sensors are installed inside and outside the vehicle to monitor the safety situation.

"In terms of adaptability, we have connectivity that allows us to build a vehicle that is constantly evolving. It can also personalize the cabin for each user. With 5G technology, high-speed, high-capacity and low-latency connectivity can be achieved between in-vehicle systems and the cloud. VIsion-S also evolves mobility into an entertainment space. Yoshida said. Includes gameplay and audio. Through our exploration of VIsion-S, and through the partners who support this initiative, we learn more about mobile. ”

CES 2022 opened on January 5, Beijing time in Las Vegas, USA. It is understood that this CES is the largest one in the automotive field, more than 185 car companies will be concentrated on the appearance, and the new technologies of global automakers in the field of autonomous driving will be displayed in a concentrated manner. Without a doubt, one of the biggest tech trends this year is autonomous driving.

According to the information previously released by Sony' official release, VISION-S is based on a new pure electric platform, which is compatible with cars, coupe cars, SUVs, MPVs and other models; although vision-S's body length is only 4895mm, it has a wheelbase of 3000mm, all thanks to the platform.

At the same time, VISION-S uses an electric drive system from McNa, and the front/rear axles of the new car are equipped with a motor with a maximum power of 200 kW; Sony officially said that vision-S's 100 km/h acceleration time is only 4.8 seconds, and the top speed is 240 km/h. Although Sony has previously stressed that it does not intend to enter the automotive industry, it is still actively working with McNastair Steyr (the manufacturer of the Mercedes G-Class, BMW Z4) to develop pure electric vehicles and plans to test new cars on public roads.

It is understood that although Sony has only recently officially announced that it will enter the field of electric vehicles, from 2020, Sony has made preparations for this, and the models manufactured on the relevant platforms have been tested for more than a year.

Sony officially announced that using Sony's own technology, communication knowledge and safety technology accumulated during the development of smartphones, Sony has listed remote control as an important technology in the era of automatic driving. To fully realize this technology vision, Sony has implemented driving tests to connect Japan and Germany via 5G and is currently working with partners to leverage the telematics system installed in VISION-S 01 to enable low-latency transmission (video and control signals) as well as communication control (monitoring and forecasting).

As we all know, Sony is a world-renowned large-scale comprehensive multinational conglomerate in Japan, it is one of the world's largest electronic product manufacturers, one of the three giants of the world's video game industry, and one of the six major film companies in Hollywood. In the eyes of foreign technology media, from cameras, PS5 game consoles to new energy electric vehicles, Sony's new business layout is worth paying attention to. For years, the industry has focused on whether Apple will produce cars. Sony showed the public a prototype with technical content, and now it has made some progress. The unveiling of Sony's new car has surprised many Sony fans and car enthusiasts, making them look forward to it.

In recent years, whether it is mobile phone manufacturers or Internet companies, they have crossed borders into the automotive industry, and "car-making" has become a new outlet. For tech giants, the effort to enter the auto industry is not only to break into a new market, but to defend its valuable territory. Previously, the business model of the automotive industry also had a one-time hardware sale to a full-life cycle service model of "hardware as the traffic entrance, software continuous charging". The automotive industry has transformed from a traditional asset-heavy cyclical industry into a technology industry for the next generation of intelligent mobile terminals. Therefore, it will attract many technology companies to compete for layout and compete to "build cars"! For tech giants, the effort to enter the auto industry is not only to break into a new market, but to defend its valuable territory. In this context, after years of investment in autonomous driving, it is not surprising that technology giants have actively engaged in the automotive industry in order to grasp the future development trend.
