CES 2022: Valeo exhibits third-generation scanning lidar

At CES 2022, Valeo's third-generation scanning lidar will make its public debut, followed by a public launch in 2024. Its main purpose is to improve road safety.

With the laser system it uses, the lidar can detect objects that are invisible to the naked eye, cameras and radar from a distance of 200 meters. It can identify all objects on the road and even calculate the correct braking distance by measuring the density of raindrops. It can also use algorithms to predict the trajectory of surrounding vehicles and trigger necessary actions accordingly. With its unique perception and analysis capabilities, the vehicle can take control of its own driving, including driving at speeds of up to 130 km/h on the highway.

In addition to the vehicles to be carried, Valeo's third-generation lidar can alert other vehicles to hazards on the road, allowing every road user to benefit from its superior perception.

In addition to long-range scanning lidar, Valeo has also developed a new lidar with close field of view, the Valeo NFL (Near Field LiDAR), which was also exhibited for the first time worldwide at CES 2022.

When this innovative technology is applied to driverless and autonomous vehicles, such as driverless delivery logistics vehicles and driverless taxis, it will form a safe "encirclement zone" around the vehicle. Once the vehicle is activated, it shows in real time the scene within a 360-degree field of view around it. As a result, the vehicle can travel freely while avoiding pedestrians and other obstacles.

When mounted on a highly autonomous vehicle, it works with other sensors to provide system redundancy for the peripheral field of view, eliminating blind spots in the field of view, allowing lane changes to be completely safe, especially in autonomous driving mode.
