Sleep Number pushes the smarter new 360 smart bed: monitors user health

IT House January 4 news, Sleep Number's 360 smart bed is a fixed project at CES, and this year is no exception. Today, Sleep Number announced the latest upgrade to its 360 smart bed, improving some built-in sensors and adding peripheral technologies such as lighting and mobile accessories, officially referred to as "smart furniture." According to Sleep Number, the company's idea is to create smart beds that are more convenient and enable people to retire or recover from injuries more comfortably.

"Smart furniture" is a new feature of the 360 smart bed, and while it looks like the kind of fancy headboard with built-in shelves, Sleep Number says it's about supporting sleep health and making it easier to use. For example, this "smart furniture" includes a mobile assist device to help sleepers who may need extra help getting into or out of bed. There are also separate audio and noise reduction technologies designed to block out ambient noise, and there are built-in reading lights, charging ports and storage areas. The home has ambient lighting designed to help maintain a normal circadian rhythm.

As for the bed itself, this year Sleep Number seems particularly keen to position the 360 bed as a potential health tool, although overall, the upgrade seems to be focused on perfecting its smart features rather than introducing groundbreaking new features. Sleep Number says the new 360 beds can continuously monitor a person's general health, sleep health behaviors, chronic sleep problems, and provide real-time insights and recommendations for sleepers, their caregivers, and doctors. The company also says that over time, the bed's artificial intelligence can identify abnormal events and notify sleepers that something is wrong.

Sleep Number has been providing sleep insights and health reports, but the company says its improved sensing makes it more advanced and can proactively alert users to upcoming illnesses and risks, such as insomnia, sleep apnea or heart problems. It should be noted that this does not mean that Sleep Number's bed can now diagnose these medical conditions. This requires fda approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and even the most advanced smartwatches have not yet met that requirement.

Sleep Number says it used more than 12 billion hours of sleep data to "dramatically innovate its 360 smart beds." In addition to software updates, physical updates include small changes such as the addition of "high-tech textiles," antimicrobial ingredients, and graphite-filled foam that is said to keep sleepers cool through air movement.

In a briefing note, Sleep Number also noted that the new 360 smart beds will be able to actively monitor body temperature to create a "microclimate" while tilting the bed to improve airflow by lifting the head without affecting spinal alignment. For the elderly or those who have been injured, Sleep Number also says it can adjust the height to make it easier to get in and out of bed.

IT House understands that the new 360 smart bed will go on sale in 2023 and will start at $1,099 (about 7,000 yuan). "Smart Furniture" will also be available in 2023, but Sleep Number has not yet announced pricing.
