In May 1940, when the Battle of Zaoyi began, Zhang Zizhong, as the commander-in-chief of the 33rd Group Army, personally went to the front line to fight the Japanese army. On May 16, in the fierce battle, General Zhang Zizhong was shot seven times in the body, a generation of famous generals, martyred, at the age of 49. Before General Zhang was martyred, he wrote (dictated) his last report to the Fifth Theater Command: I fought and died, and I asked myself whether I was worthy of the country and the nation. After Zhang Zizhong's sacrifice, Rikou admired his military integrity. The procession took off their hats, saluted the march, and buried them in coffins on the hillside of the pumpkin shop, and erected a tombstone with the inscription "Tomb of The Great General Zhang Zizhong".
Upon learning of Zhang Zizhong's martyrdom, Chiang Kai-shek was horrified and immediately ordered the Fifth Theater to retake General Zhang's remains at any cost. Huang Weigang, commander of the 38th Division, led hundreds of men to cross the Xiang River again, and after a fierce battle, he snatched the general's body back. After the heavy burial, General Zhang's coffin was escorted by 100,000 people, boarded a ship in Yichang, and transported to Chongqing. When the coffin was transported to the Chongqing wharf, Chiang Kai-shek, Feng Yuxiang and other military and political dignitaries stood at the wharf to greet the spirit, and Chiang Kai-shek stroked the coffin and wept bitterly. Zhang Zizhong is a national hero, loyal to the country, righteous and benevolent, and his great spirit will last forever! Since the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Zhang Zizhong was the first person to personally come to the front line with the rank of lieutenant general and commander-in-chief of the group army, and those who died on the battlefield were killed. After Zhang Zizhong's martyrdom, he was posthumously awarded the rank of general of the army.
Zhang Zizhong's wife was Li Minhui. Knowing that her husband sacrificed for the country, she was deeply saddened, and Li Minhui said: "Since I was loyal to the country and died on the battlefield, although I am a woman, I should also have a share." After that, Li Minhui took advantage of the lack of attention of her family, locked herself in a room, went on a hunger strike for seven days, and finally died. However, there are also sources that li Minhui died of cancer. Zhang Lianyun, the daughter of Zhang Zizhong, once said: When my father died, my mother Li Minhui's cancer was in its advanced stage and was receiving treatment in the hospital, and we did not dare to tell her the truth. When her mother died, she only remembered that the division commander had returned, and the division commander had returned. Three months after his father's death, his mother also died of illness. ”
Zhang Zizhong and Li Minhui have two sons and a daughter. The eldest son, Zhang Lianzhen, was born in 1910. He worked for the financial authorities and has been living in Shanghai. He died in 1968. The second son, Zhang Lianjing, was born in 1917. He studied at the 10th Whampoa Military Academy. He contracted typhoid fever and died in 1934. Daughter Zhang Lianyun, born in 1923. After graduating from Fudan University, she has been engaged in education, medical care and other work for a long time.
Zhang Lianzhen has seven sons, most of whom are engaged in technical work, and all of them have achieved great success. Zhang Lianzhen's eldest son was Zhang Qingyi. Zhang Qingyi has lived in Tianjin for a long time. After retiring from the technical transformation department of the Economic and Trade Commission, he began to devote himself to the study of various historical facts related to his grandfather Zhang Zizhong.
Zhang Lianzhen's second son was Zhang Qing'an. Zhang Qing'an's nickname is "Xifeng", why is it called Xifeng? Because zhang Zizhong was born in the Great Wall to resist the war, he fought with the Japanese army at Xifengkou. After Zhang Zizhong's safe return, his family named Xifeng Qing'an. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Zhang Qingan lived in Shanghai, engaged in engineering and technical work, and later retired from the Shanghai Electric Power Engineering Research Institute.
Zhang Lianzhen's third son was named Zhang Qinglong. He graduated from Tsinghua University in his early years, went to the United States for further studies, and became a tenured professor in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Cleveland in Ohio State. Qinglong Zhang specializes in wind tunnel experiments (aerodynamic research). It is worth mentioning that Zhang Qinglong, the grandson of General Zhang Zizhong, was incorporated into the military after he became a citizen of the United States. Zhang Lianzhen's fifth son was Zhang Qingfan. Zhang Qingfan graduated from Shanghai Normal University. Later, he went to the United States to engage in mathematical research and joined the United States as an American citizen. Zhang Lianzhen's sixth son was Zhang Qingcheng. Zhang Qingcheng worked in Sichuan and held important positions. Zhang Lianzhen's seventh son was Zhang Qingxin.
