Zhang Zizhong was a native of Shandong, and later when he joined the army, he was recommended by his friends and came to Feng Yuxiang's troops, Feng Yuxiang saw that Zhang Zizhong was tall and heroic, and he had quite a "heavy spirit", so he was very satisfied with him, and in the following years, Zhang Zizhong was in the Northwest Army, successively serving as regiment commander and division commander.
In 1933, the Great Wall Anti-Japanese War broke out, Zhang Zizhong was the commander of the 38th Division, he led his troops to participate in the Great Wall War of Resistance, made great contributions, in 1937, the Japanese offensive has been determined, the 29th Army stationed in Beiping, as its main division commander, Zhang Zizhong was ordered by the commander Song Zheyuan, to negotiate with the Japanese army, circumvention, at that time he also led the troops to Visit Japan, the purpose of which was to seek Japan to give up attacking China.
After the outbreak of the July 7 Incident, Song Zheyuan led the 29th Army to retreat, Zhang Zizhong stayed in Beiping to negotiate with the Japanese army, during this period, Zhang Zizhong was misunderstood, public opinion called him a "traitor" under the exhaustion of his heart, Zhang Zizhong fled Beiping and came to Nanjing.
Chiang Kai-shek knew that Zhang Zizhong was in difficulty, so he did not blame him too much, and soon Zhang Zizhong was appointed commander of the 59th Army, and when he came to the army, Zhang Zizhong said to the soldiers: "Today I came to seek death with everyone."
After that, in the Battle of Linyi and the Battle of Suizao, Zhang Zizhong led his troops to heroically attack and destroyed many Japanese troops, but even so, there were still many people who did not take the name of "Traitor" from him.
In 1940, the Japanese army gathered 300,000 troops to hold the Battle of Zaoyi, when Zhang Zizhong was the commander-in-chief of the 33rd Group Army, when the Japanese army broke through the first line of defense, Zhang Zizhong, with the heart of death, led more than 2,000 people across the Xiang river to launch an attack on the Japanese army, on May 15, more than 10,000 Japanese troops surrounded Zhang Zizhong's troops at pumpkin shop.
On May 16, Zhang Zizhong led his troops to fight bravely, but unfortunately died because they were outnumbered.
The Japanese army admired Zhang Zizhong's bravery and buried him thickly, and later Huang Weigang, commander of the 38th Division, led his troops to snatch Zhang Zizhong's body from the Japanese army and immediately transported it to Chongqing, where Chiang Kai-shek ordered a state funeral to be held and included in the Martyrs' Shrine.
In the early years, Zhang Zizhong, under the arrangement of his family, married a wife Li Minhui, and since then the two have loved each other for many years, and after General Zhang Zizhong sacrificed his life for the country for more than 2 months, Li Minhui learned of this news, and she was devastated: "Zhang Zizhong died in battle for the country, I am not sad. Although I am a woman, I should also have a share. ”
After a few days, she called Zhang Zizhong's brother over and handed him over the family affairs, and then she went into the house and died after a seven-day hunger strike.
After the news of Li Minhui's death came out, the whole country was shocked, everyone was touched by the spirit of loyalty, courage, benevolence and righteousness of the husband and wife, and Feng Yuxiang, as Zhang Zizhong's old boss, was even more moved after hearing about this, and he personally ordered Zhang Zizhong and Li Minhui to be buried together in the foothills of Chongqing Meihua Mountain.
After the death of Zhang Zizhong and his wife, what about their descendants, the two had two sons and a daughter, namely Zhang Lianzhen, Zhang Lianjing, and Zhang Lianyun.
The eldest son, Zhang Lianzhen, worked in the financial organs and later lived in Shanghai, he had seven children, the second son Zhang Lianjing died early at the age of 17, and the third daughter, Zhang Lianyun, was a high-achieving student graduated from Fudan University, who had been engaged in medical treatment, education and other work for a long time, and later retired as vice chairman of the Beijing Political Consultative Conference.
In 1982, General Zhang Zizhong was posthumously recognized as a "revolutionary martyr"
