In 1924, when the Whampoa Military Academy began to recruit new students, at this time Fan Hanjie was not only 28 years old, but also the colonel commander, which can be described as a bright future, but he resolutely gave up the colonel commander to apply for the Whampoa Military Academy out of revolutionary enthusiasm, in the first batch of Whampoa students, he and Zeng Kuanqing, Li Xianzhou three people are the oldest, known as the "three elders", but he can have the rank of colonel, many sources say that the commander of the major general is not accurate.

During his studies at the Whampoa Military Academy, he did not have the slightest frame of a colonel commander, humbly learned from scratch, and conscientiously participated in various trainings. At that time, the Whampoa Military Academy was under-taught, and Fan Hanjie was appointed by the school to serve as a topography instructor because he graduated from the surveying school and was proficient in topography and surveying.

Sometimes when the school instructor teaches the course, he will ask Fan Hanjie for advice to confirm that there is no misunderstanding, and the school also asks him to be a teacher to tell the students, after all, his experience and ability are recognized by everyone. The students of the school called him "Big Brother". After graduating from the Whampoa Military Academy, Fan Hanjie returned to the Guangdong Army, and since he was previously a colonel commander, he served as a lieutenant colonel staff officer and battalion commander in the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division of the Guangdong Army.

In March 1944, Fan Hanjie was promoted to deputy commander and chief of staff of the First Theater. At this time, due to the japanese army's gradual defeat in the Pacific War, the sea passage from Southeast Asia to the Japanese mainland had been cut off by the US army, because it was decided to launch "Operation No. 1" in the Chinese theater and open up the mainland communication line, so the Japanese 12th Army invaded western Henan and launched a fierce offensive against the first theater. Annihilating more than 10,000 enemies, it crushed the Japanese attempt to seize Xi'an and threaten Chongqing. In March 1945, he was promoted to lieutenant general. In August 1945, Japan surrendered, and Fan Hanjie and Hu Zongnan went to Zhengzhou together to accept the surrender of the Japanese commander in Henan. This was the most glorious period in Fan Hanjie's military career after the Northern Expedition, and it was also the most glorious period in his life course.

When the Liaoshen Campaign broke out in 1948, Fan Hanjie was transferred to the northeast as deputy commander-in-chief of the "Suppression General" and director of the Jinzhou Command Post, leading an army of 150,000 to firmly hold Jinzhou. Later, under the encirclement and suppression of the Northeast Field Army, Jinzhou was captured, fan Hanjie escaped in the dark of night with his wife and three subordinates in disguise, and the next day he was stopped by the People's Liberation Army on the path of Gujiapu in Daliushu Village, Niangnianggong Town, Jinxian County, more than 10 kilometers southeast of Jinzhou City, and was immediately identified and captured. He was later reformed through labor in a detention center and was pardoned in 1960.

In 1964, he became a member of the Standing Committee of the Fourth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He died in Beijing in January 1976 at the age of 80.
